Get's better every time
on April 16, 2014

Turbo Tax is easier and more powerful each year. I am impressed by the intuitive user interface, and the flow of questions gets me quickly to situations that apply to me, without getting bogged down in tax situations that don't apply. I am also impressed by the speed of the program when checking my return. All in all, a great product at a reasonable price. I'm coming back next year.
What's great about it: Easy to use, intuitive, quickly find what I need
What's not so great: none

TurboTax - Losing its edge?
on April 16, 2014

* SAVE AS: It is great to be able save at different points without overwriting earlier save. Last year could save as, now no more. Can't even rename file. * TRANSPARENCY REDUCED: It is not as easy to switch to forms to see what exactly was filled in. This was a good feature to bring back. * PDF SAVE of taxes: TT should provide the pdf version not the printing program. Another feature to bring back. * BACK BUTTON: Mostly the back button takes you back to the beginning rather than to the previous screen - this is very disconcerting. Please allow back to the previous screen to if oyu wish to the beginning as well. * BACK & FORWARD BUTTONS: Keeping these in the same location enables quick forward and backward movement and saves time.
What's great about it: Still good, but lost some good features from previous tear's version.
What's not so great: * SAVE AS: It is great to be able save at different points without overwriting earlier save. Last year could save as,

Fed is excellent, VT state is lacking
on April 16, 2014

As usual, TurboTax Fed is excellent - makes the pain of doing your own taxes simpler with thorough interview process, and offers plenty of supplemental help.
On the other hand, the VT State is almost not worth buying - lots of the questions it steps you through are unclear, and little to no additional help available - had to go to IRS website to read instructions on standard main forms.
After completing the Fed & state returns, I use the save-to-PDF feature - which is great for archiving without needing the TurboTax program to view the return. However there is no way to add a password to secure the resulting PDF, so lots of sensitive info is unprotected.
What's great about it: Simple, easy to use, lots of helpful hints (Fed)
What's not so great: VT state lacking, saved PDFs are unsecured (no password)

After 7 attempts, using various "help" suggestions and rechecking and rechecking info from last year's return, still could not file on-line ---- totally frustrating--- finally mailed-- not happy with Turbo this year
What's great about it: easy to fill out
What's not so great: could not file

Calcs great, data entry tedious
on April 16, 2014
Posted by: Alessio
TurboTax is quite good with the calcs. Drawbacks are the tedious data entry for charitable contributions & capital gains, which can require so many forms that it becomes hard to navigate up and down the Forms menu (give option to compress each). TurboTax should provide a single front worksheet for Charitable Contributions and Capital Gains and then divide the data up electronically, in the background, to fill any IRS-required forms. Also, it can be very hard to find the form where you need to enter the data that so nicely appears in the different Schedules, the 1040 and other forms that aggregate data. Intermingling of irs forms and 'worksheets' very confusing: should be able to see schedules as wysiwyg without printing. EVERY box should be able to click to get to source and help. As requested before: quick print option, just forms/lines with data, for review; with date/time stamp of changes.
What's great about it: Calcs are quick, as is electronic filing
What's not so great: Hard to find right forms, need a universal double-click to go to form for data entry.

TurboTax2013
on April 16, 2014

Have used Turbo Tax and the Mac version before it was Turbo Tax. Although my return is not complicated it does include a few things such as rental property and employment expenses that have always been easy to record and calculate. Would recommend this program for a novice or seasoned tax preparer.
What's great about it: User friendly, low cost, comprehensive, complete
What's not so great: Some difficulty in finding forms
