great until you have to file

when there is a problem, it should take you to the correct page so you can correct. they give you a cryptic message, but you have to hunt to find it. because usually it is an obscure problem like a missing number or too many numbers. It is frustrating because you are looking for a needle in a haystack. but this could be due to the fact that this is not a mac-friendly software. I think I would only recommend to people who have a pc…no mac.
What's great about it: you have to pay before it will go
What's not so great: if it doesn't go, it doesn't tell you where the problem is

I can kick myself for not using Turbotax all those years!!! People tried to tell me but I was hardheaded and continued to use my tax person. Well, I finally got it. LOVE IT!!!

A few Glitches This Year

Ambiguous instructions relative to "double taxing" when income for services was received and may be taxed by 2 states.
Hang-up on zip codes for mailing address of charitable organization that had no local address. Caused long delay in ability to transmit final doc. Made filing over deadline.
Not enough explanation on additional job expenses when job has paid per diem.

Still The Best

TurboTax really makes it hard to imagine ever having to do taxes by hand. There is always room for improvement. The time saved more than compensates for any improvement I can come up with. I think it would be nice to add an element of education to keep people from forgetting how this all works or becoming unnaturally dependent on and accepting of this fantastic tool. It could also help people feel more at ease if they understand more of what is going on and why.
What's great about it: Thorough, but flexible enough to allow those who need less attention to cruise quickly along. Runs fast also.
What's not so great: Nothing significant

a few improvements needed

I was nearly done when I went back to do a quick review and wound up making a wrong turn somewhere, which I think is what caused an extra Schedule C to be generated that skewed the results. Also, it appeared that all the info I had already put into the original Schedule C was erased, and I had to do it all over again. It could be that the second Schedule C that had been generated was blank.
What I did was: At the very beginning I let you take me through step by step. But then I wanted to go back over and review the work, and that time I selected the manual option. That might be where I went wrong. Could you put some kind of fail-safe measure in there to stop me and raise a red flag?
What's great about it: general ease of use, quick calculations
What's not so great: got a bit confusing at times & made wrong turns possible -- needs more fail-safe measures

The standard by which others are judged

I'll keep this short ... maybe. Turbotax is nearly perfect. So much so I'll just skip the pros and get to the couple of cons that prevent it from being perfect. Con #1: When printing out your taxes for filing Turbotax insists on printing out the first, or filing instruction, page. That is not that big an issue ... unless you have a duplex printer. Then it'll print the filing instructions on the front page and on the back page it'll print out the front page of your first official tax form (1040)! Quite awkward. It basically does not know how to separate each form from printing on each others backside. You'll instead have to tell Turbotax to print out each form separately by inputting the page numbers for each form to print out so that everything prints out the way it was intended as if you were filling out the official forms by hand.. An unnecessary hassle especially if you have several forms to file. Con #2: Turbotax STILL doesn't know how to suggest a proper save filename if you're doing multiple tax returns with the same last name and same beginning initial of the first name. You'd think after all these years they would have taken care of this potentially destruction glitch. For instance, say you are doing separate tax returns for John Doe and Jane Doe. You do John's first and save it with a filename starting with "2014 Doe J." Well when you do Jane's tax return it will suggest the same exact filename! Now if you're tired and not paying attention, it is all too easy to blindly skip the part when it asks to save and overwrite the existing file! Oops! There goes John's tax return! Infuriating! Other than these two issues, Turbotax has been great over the years and I've been using it since 1995.
