2 bugs
on April 15, 2014
Posted by: ProProgrammer
I used the Deluxe version this year and noticed obvious bugs.
1. The software kept incorrectly saying that Employer State ID didn't have 14 characters when in actuality there were 14 characters.
2. After entering in the "Nonemployee compensation" for a 1099-misc from a customer listed from the previous year, the software did not display the income on the income summary page. I had to delete the 1099-misc listing and re-enter it before the income would show up
What's great about it: Efficient, professional, accurate
What's not so great: It had 2 obvious bugs this year and at least one spelling error

OK -- until printing
on April 15, 2014
Posted by: JP427
Seemed even easier than last year, until I needed to efile and print. My account didn't seem to work from year's past and the printing for my records produced many almost blank pages instead of the expected state form.
What's great about it: Consistently good -- improved from last year
What's not so great: Printed Federal OK, then printed garbage for state return.

Where is Schedule A
on April 15, 2014
Posted by: TexasMomSame
Schedule C and other odd schedules showed up in the left bar "menu" so it was easy to go back to them. Schedule A never did. i had to go to forms, open form, type Schedule A in the search field, select the schedule and click enter every time I needed to get back into the form and/or its worksheets. Not efficient and not appreciated.
What's great about it: Most forms worked on show up in left bar
What's not so great: Schedule A had to be searched for every time!!

The cost of e-filing the state return increased 25% from last year. This seems excessive.
What's great about it: Step by Step Walkthru
What's not so great: Cost of e-filing state return

Always reliable

Turbotax is always reliable and covers a large number of tax issues in a simplified manner, with tips along the way to help the user decide whether a topic is relevant. Only downside is that the cost for state filings can be expensive.
What's great about it: Reliable, simple to use, tips to help complete taxes
What's not so great: Cost of state filings

Fine until the last important step
on April 15, 2014

This process went well until I needed to file electronically, which was important because I was running right up to the deadline. Now I'll need to pay a penalty for late filing, mailing it the next day because I can't override a W2's actual entries. And then it refused to recognize my own security clue. So I must resort to mailing it in the next day instead. Very disappointing.
What's great about it: all good until the system miscued on a complex W2
What's not so great: added insult to injury by refusing my final return

I am so disappointed
on April 15, 2014

I've used Turbotax since the 80s...and in the past 2 years it has been absolutely unreliable. I ended up with a major bill from the IRS when Turbotax said I'd get a refund. I found that when it printed, it gave two different answers to taxes due...depending on how I filed. I also was appalled that they shut down the efile before all the continental United States had reached midnight Oct. 15,2013 for 2012 extension filers. I had to file by mailed paper copy.
This year (I'm a former CPA) the explanations, questions and entries were almost incomprehensible if you had any complexity in your tax return. I am massively disappointed in Turbotax. It was a wonderful program for 20 years. Now it's rather awful to enter and you can't be sure of the outcome. Please bring back the Good Turbotax or I'll have to switch to another program.
One aspect that appears to be working well is Audit Defense.
What's great about it: you can file late on April 15...important if your printer dies!
What's not so great: AWFUL Program

Give till it Hurts

Turbo Tax deluxe is a great program and is the best DIY tax prep on the market. It delivers what it promises. It takes some of the drudgery out of paying ones taxes. I guess you can say there are now three sure things in this life: Death, Taxes, and Turbo Tax! (My apologies to Ben Franklin).
What's great about it: This program is mature and well designed
What's not so great: I dont think tax laws are ever going to be easy even with turbo tax :)
