Way too slow
on April 15, 2014

I have been using TurboTax for years, but never again. The software ran extremely slow all day, turned a 45-minute job into a five-hour ordeal and almost made me late filing my federal return. Finally finished at a very stressful 11:45 p.m. Know I shouldn't wait until April 15, but had no choice this time. I'm sure millions of people were filing at the same time, but Intuit has to expect that and be prepared for it. Clearly, that didn't happen. I could have done my taxes faster on paper.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Takes all day. And I mean all day.

much better but still confusing

It took me more than an hour before I figured out that I had created a duplicate of form 8829. e-file was great but took longer than i expected. there is an error in the filing instructions saying forms can be filed by Wednesday April 15, 2014. April 15 is Tuesday.
otherwise this was relatively easy, even though it took me 7 hours to prepare and submit the forms. I would have liked to carry information from the previous year but could not find the instructions to do so.
What's great about it: much simpler to do than previous years; question and answer more to the point; easy to switch from questions to forms.
What's not so great: error correction instructions often confusing.

update, crash, repeat
on April 15, 2014

I had to search the intuit website several times to find how to manage a number of errors I encountered - the first was that the state taxes, once downloaded, crashed the application. This made me wonder what was in the updates they had me download in the first place. The patch to fix this on the website, involved me deleting a bunch of files and restarting and reloading updates. The same issue occurred when I went to e-file my taxes. This was frustrating and brings into question the reputation of Turbotax. I have never had such frustration with TT or filing my taxes before. Due to the updates and web searches, it took me several evenings to complete my taxes this year - I would have mailed my return but, it took awhile to manage these issues, so, I was not going to make it to the Post Office in time. The other frustration that I encountered might be a more personal matter but, in the section about nanny taxes, there should be a reference to or question about taxes prepaid throughout the year. Many families who use nanny tax services are scheduled for this and it doesn't appear on the government employer tax document. Having a cue to do this section or an automatic launch of that section (when appropriate) would be useful. I spent awhile trying to figure out why it appeared I hadn't been paying quarterly.
What's great about it: imported data from last year, easy format
What's not so great: crashed with state taxes on mac, update error to e-file

What's not so great: you keep going up on price
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Not quite up to par for 2013

This year I found TurboTax to be easy to use but it did show mistakes in calculating the amount due for my state taxes when I had to file an amended return. It was also very confusing and did not allow me to choose to file the state taxes by mail while taking advantage of eFiling the federal forms. If only allowed me to say not to file the State via eFile yet, but do it later. I had printed the State Taxes and sent them via mail after efiling the Federals, when I noticed that I had missed 2 1099-R forms. When I added the 2 forms in an amended form, it calculated the difference for the federal return but on the state return it stated that I had no refund coming and said that I owed nothing. I hads to manually calculate the difference between the first check that I had already sent and the new amount that it said I had paid already. Luckily, I had printed a copy of the entire first set of returns and then a copy of the amended returns.
What's great about it: seemed easier to use.
What's not so great: Did not accurately calculate the amended amount to pay

turbo tax 2013 review 8891
on April 15, 2014
Posted by: aardvark1701
When we did the review Turbo Tax told us that we had an error, that the country was missing on form 8891, a form that other than our name and address was blank of all other information. I am sure this form was not needed. I never found out why, yet it held up our return. Our return does not use this form at all for any reason. After putting 'other countries' for the country it let us submit our return, which by the way did not include a form 8891. Unless I get a good answer soon on what happened, this kind of glitch is a strong deterrent to ever using Turbo Tax again.
What's great about it: Much easier to navigate than in the past
What's not so great: Held up our return until we filled in a country on a blank form
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

TurboTax is easy to use. But if you are filing multiple states this may not be the most economical choice.
What's great about it: Ease of use
What's not so great: Not good for multiple state filers
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
