Seems to be Trying Too Hard

Better than going to a tax company, but TurboTax... • Didn't automatically do an update when I installed it, even though I told it to always automatically check; later it complained that a form wasn't ready - and again, it didn't bother to check; I manually had it check for updates, and it found several, but it kept telling me there was a section that wasn't current • Kept asking about State even though it knew there is no tax in this state • Often showed it was calculating or checking something - and then just sat there waiting for me to click a button to find out the result • Runs back to the same, increasingly lengthy, overview screen over and over as it goes through each category of income or deductions • Sales pitches for various TurboTax products and services get old
What's great about it: Gets the Big Stuff Right: Remembers my info from last year and the return looks right
What's not so great: Death by a Thousand Paper Cuts: Didn't automatically check for updates, too many repetative pages and sales pitches

Several hiccups
on April 15, 2014

I encountered several bugs that were almost show stoppers. I explicitly said that I did not have college tuition this year, yet TurboTax insisted that I type in a school and associated information and would not let me pass this section until I entered info that is inapplicable/nonexistent. I tried again and again to go back and hit "No", but it still took me to this part of the interview. I had to go to the manual index to bypass this section.
Then, it complained that it could not e-file because I needed to update. I had updated two hours earlier, before starting, and I updated after it told me to update. Then I updated again, and again (probably about 10 times). It always said there were more updates. I restarted the program a few times. After all that, eventually it did allow me to e-file. I'm not sure what finally did the trick.
This was a rather harrowing experience, especially since I did wait for the final hours to file. Someone not as relatively tech savvy as I would have had some major problems getting this through.
I also wish that I could use the keyboard to navigate rather than moving the mouse around just to hit a lot of no's. Not huge, but would definitely make a better experience for me. Finally, the layout required me to scroll vertically down judge a smidge to get to the Next button quite often. This was a little confusing, because I didn't always know it was there, though I eventually learned to look. This was on a Mac Air. I wish there were a fullscreen option or some remedy for this. Again, not huge, but took away from the experience.
What's great about it: good for skipping around
What's not so great: bugs, sometimes confusing language

I hate taxes

Everything was great until in the final step it told me I had to print a form and mail payment to IN but I had paid by direct deposit when given the opportunity. couldn't verify or confirm by going "back" so that's very confusing.
also, i don't know why if I only skipped one year on Turbo Tax, I had to start all over again with info. why couldn't you import from my 2011 return?
What's great about it: able to import investment 1099
What's not so great: see below

KEEPS GETTING BETTER AND BETTER EACH YEAR
on April 15, 2014

TurboTax keeps getting better and better each year. It gives great links to help and IRS publications to help educate us on what to pay attention to each year. It does a great job of capturing historical information and related carryovers/forwards, etc.
Unless someone is either and idiot or has some crazy, complex international business with selling of s-corp interests or something like that, not sure why anyone pays for a third party. Even with complicating factors like refinancing mortgages, rental properties, capital gains/losses, etc., TurboTax makes it easy and educational.
What's great about it: EASY/INTUITIVE (PARDON THE PUN); IDIOT PROOF
What's not so great: COST FOR STATE eFILING
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Very disappointed this year
on April 15, 2014

Turbo Tax is inexpensive and easy to use, but this year I was quite disappointed with the product. There was an error where a Schedule F (farm income) repeatedly generated on my state return despite me never entering farm income. I repeatedly deleted the form, but it would regenerate every time I was ready to file. I finally found a solution from another user who said I had to add a farm and then delete it from my federal return in order to work around the error. This is ridiculous, especially when tons of people reported this error to turbo tax.
I also experienced an error where my updates wouldn't "take" and so I wasn't able to e-file. Apparently this is a common problem with Mac users, and again, I found a workaround from another user.
Turbo Tax really needs to do a better job with updates and being responsive to issues that crop up on their help forums.
What's great about it: Inexpensive, easy to use
What's not so great: Repeated errors this year
Pros: I had a baby

Great except does not tie into my state to pay

Pretty easy to use. Does not link into being able to pay taxes directly from turbo tax to NC like you can to federal.
The NC site is real "fun" to try to figure out.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Difficult to figure out how to pay for NC taxes

Turbod My Tax Refund
on April 15, 2014

I wish I remembered how easy and painless TurboTax was! I wait until the last minute to do my taxes just to realize how easy it is when using TurboTax. Next year I will do my taxes as soon as my W-2 is generated.
What's great about it: Started at 6:55 - Finished at 8:21! And 20x more in my refund! Woo Hoo!
What's not so great: My refund won't be here tomorrow!
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
