Pretty good for experienced preparer

This software works quite well for an experienced filer with a relatively uncomplicated return. There is still a good bit of IRS jargon to wade through, so it helps if you are not a complete novice. A liberal use of Google helps too. Nothing will replace saving every little piece of potentially tax related paper that you collect during the year, complete with dates spent/received. Throw NOTHING away and keep it organized. If you do that, the experience is relatively strait forward. If you've got weird sources of income or expenses requiring special calculations, I'd still hire a good pro.
What's great about it: Quite a bit of supporting information
What's not so great: still loaded with opaque jargon

I have been using TurboTax for over 10 years now and each year, it just seems to get better. I love the fact that TurboTax handles the actual calculations and when done looks for errors and compares your return to others to give you an idea of your chances of being audited.
What's great about it: imports from previous return; easy to use

I probably will go back to the previous on-line tax filing program rather than purchasing this program again. I hate hidden costs.
What's great about it: fairly simple to use
What's not so great: hidden costs on filing state etc.

2013 tax program review

I had a lot of trouble entering the residential energy credit information on the state return and was credited less than the 35% tax credit due. I assume I can carry over this deficit to tax year 2014, but the Turbo Tax program gave no explanation of this and did not print a carry over form.
If someone at your company can respond to this situation, I would greatly appreciate it. Please e-mail me at the address above.
What's great about it: Did a thorough job on the federal return
What's not so great: Did a cursory and confusing job on the North Carolina state return

What's not so great: naviagation to specific parts is better than in past-- still sometimes a little difficult or many steps

upload to current software should occur at start

I loaded my program/CD on April 12th. I assumed after loading it would search internet and get updates or prompt me to do that before starting my review. I sort of remember it doing this in past years. I wondered why the software loaded so fast this year -- thought maybe my new computer was faster. :)
But when I finished review on April 14th, it said had errors because tax rules changed and progam did not include and I had to go to some tab and upload new fixes. After I uploaded it re-started the tax return. I was able to get all my info but I could have clicked import from last year button or something but then I looked for something else. It made me nervous. I figured it out but thought it should have happened in different order.
What's great about it: less stressful when walked thru all the questions
What's not so great: got error at review cause software not updated
