Not Nearly As Good As Previous Editions
on April 15, 2014

Got all the way through and, although I had earlier downloaded the current software update, TurboTax said my return could not be e-filed because there were newer update - NEWER in the last hour? Anyway, after finally figuring out where the main menu actually was (forget their instructions because they are wrong for a Mac) I downloaded the software updates again - still could not transmit for exactly the same stated reason. After downloading the updates 5 time (I'm persistent if nothing else) and failing to transmit 5 times I finally decided to reboot my system (something that was not suggested on the help page or on the update itself) - the update then FINALLY worked. I spent nearly as much time trying to transmit my returns as I did completing them. Some elements of this version as confusing and not nearly as easy to follow as previous years. Since my information is all archived I'll probably use TurboTax again next year but I'm not sure.
What's great about it: Fairly easy to follow.
What's not so great: Poor, unclear and incomplete explanations for some entries.

Like the detailed questions on deductions. Found out some things were deductible that I didn't know about.
What's great about it: Easy to understand
What's not so great: A little expensive for extra state forms - school district taxes

An Off-year

I've been using Turbo-Tax for years, since the Mac-in-Tax days. It's always been an easy-to-use and understand as well as dependable program. However, this year I've never had so many issues trying to transmit returns. The program always updates at launch, but then will tell you there's another update when trying to transmit a return. Apply another update, try to transmit again - no joy. Only Quitting the program, relaunching it, letting it find No Updates, then proceeding from where you left off results in a successful transmission of update. I had this happen on 3 of the 4 returns I did for myself and family. Not what I expect from this usually excellent program.
What's great about it: Easy-to-understand
What's not so great: 2013 version buggy

Double Entry Problem
on April 15, 2014

Overall the experience was great. Saved money and got bigger return.
But a dividend and a separate stock sale, long term capital gain, loss, were entered accurately manually and entered from import from Quicken with my bank as the broker. Two problems there:
1. The information from Quicken 2012 did not specify my bank as the broker, it was assumed by the program.
2. I would hope that Turbotax would be able to Identify identical or nearly identical amounts and ask if they were the same transaction.
I found the problem on a detailed review of the preview before filing. Got me another $400 in refund.
I have used TurboTax before and been very pleased with it. I am confident that this glitch will be fixed on future versions.
I had an IRA rollover Qualified Charitable Distribution and would have liked to include the letter from the charity to clarify where the money went. I wish we could include PDFs of supporting documents as I have always done with my paper tax returns.
What's great about it: Detailed easy questions for entries
What's not so great: Does not recognize double entry when manually entered information is same as imported information.

Evaluation

When I first used TurboTax back in the 90's it seemed as though it were easier, primarily because you answered all my questions. Now I have to dig harder to figure out what is happening. Example: Nondeductible IRA's; I entered my total basis in traditional IRA's, and the value of my IRA at the end of the year. When I got to the summary it showed 0 for nondeductible IRA's, which I would not have picked up if it weren't for the comparison to last year. When I went to the form 8606 you had not made any entries. after going back and forth a number of times trying to figure out what I had missed, I finally came to the conclusion that I hadn't missed anything. So, I went to the form 8606 and did an override, which I didn't find terribly easy, but it finally registered properly on the form and in your comparison.
What's great about it: Easier than working through everything with IRS forms and instructions
What's not so great: confusing or difficult to maneuver in some areas
Pros: I bought or sold investments
