Canadian RRSP and LIF
on April 15, 2014

I taught at a Canadian university for 13 years. We moved back to the US in 1987, leaving our pension behind since cashing out would have zeroed out the employer contribution. A friend (no longer living) helped set up an RRSP which worked perfectly at both preserving and growing our assets., which had almost tripled in 25 years. I struggled with how to do my taxes for ten years post-retirement UNTIL NOW! This years TurboTax integrates the Canadian retirement funds, from LIF's and RRSP seamlessly.
What's great about it: Turbotax now integrates Canadian retirement funds in RRSP's and LIF's. Hallujah!
What's not so great: None that I found.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

We owe a lot to feds...want to make partial payment on April 15 but are not given the e-payment opportunity to pay part of what we owe. All or nothing is the apparent choice.
What's great about it: carrys info over from previous years, deduction help
What's not so great: cannot adjust how much money to pay feds unless it is the total amount due.

I don't like how the default is set for e-file your state return, and then if you say you want to mail it in it does not ask you the same questions about how to process your refund. You have to manually go in and enter your account information in the worksheet because you are not prompted in the step-by-step process. The only time I did not have to remember to go in and enter the account information into the worksheet was if the prior year's state return had account information. I had already saved everything and printed everything out before I noticed the missing information on my state tax forms and had to take the time to re-print and save.
What's not so great: default is e-file for state

The mechanics of the easy step method needs to be tested by several independent people before release. As I completed various answers, the software would return back up to the beginning of the topic, requiring me so scroll down again and again to the next topic. The retirement section was much better last year. I don't know why it was re-written. It lumped defined benefit pension plans and IRA's, causing much confusion about RMD's. .
What's great about it: In general, a good progran to get return done and filed.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Effortless

Doing taxes now is actually pleasant. Thank you, Turbo Tax, for existing. Every year I am more and more grateful. Entering information and having the software figure out what to do was effortless.
To clarify the above 'Con' comment, I noticed that once I was done completing an income or an expense/deduction section, to review what was done up to then I was taken back to the summary for income or deductions, but it was at the top of that page and then I had to scroll down to continue with the next deduction. Just one idea is to take me to where the most recently completed section is in the summary.
The attached picture is for clarification. For example, after completing info about deductions about my home, instead of being taken to the "Your home" section, I was taken all the way back to the top and had to scroll down to proceed to the next section, "You and your family".
What's great about it: Guiding me was smooth
What's not so great: I'd prefer to be taken to a screen listing the section at the top after completing income or deductions section.
Pros: I moved
