TurboTax 2013
on April 15, 2014

TurboTax takes the guesswork out of preparing taxes and makes an otherwise arduous process simple. It would have taken me days to complete my taxes manually. Instead it takes an hour or two.
What's great about it: Easy to complete. .
What's not so great: None
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Good but still issues with MLP filing

TurboTax has always been quite easy to use and has a nice step by step. However - there is a HUGE glitch that has been outstanding now for at least 2 years and has caused numerous forum posts. This STILL has not been fixed. If you have 1099B transactions reported from your brokerage upon selling MLP ETF's (PTP), it creates duplicate entries and thus has the potential to massively increase your tax amount, in addition to being outright wrong according the the IRS. You have to manually twist and turn to figure out how to even account for this moderately common situation.
What's great about it: Easy to Use
What's not so great: Creates duplicate entries for 1099B & MLP dispositions

More Difficult

The clarity of questions and descriptions was absent this year. This used to be a user friendly program. What happened; did the "Geek Squad" attack the language and decide this should be for tech "smarties" only?
What's great about it: No comment
What's not so great: Much more difficult this year
Pros: I moved

Turbotax Deluxe

TurboTax is an excellent tax preparation product. I have used it for several years and would not use any other tax preparation product. It is much less expensive and I have more control over my information and return than having a professional prepare my taxes. TurboTax looks at all possible tax situations and explains them and maximizes your deductions. I highly recommend TurboTax.
What's great about it: guides you through tax form, inputs data from prior year, automatic updates for tax law changes
What's not so great: more difficult to input data without using the guide than earlier versions

When I started today, it stated updates were available, went through download and installed with restart. When I tried to e-file, it failed twice because "update available." Each time I had to go through all the screens. Then I went to update menu and downloaded some more. In release notes, the last update was earlier in April - nothing between 9 and 10 AM on 4/15/2014. I quit and restarted the program and then it successfully filed. Again, I had to go through multiple screens to get to the filing.
Similarly, if I want to review certain information, I have to go through a lot of introductory screens rather than directly to target data.
I've been using this product since it first appeared as MacInTax and will continue to do so, but Easy Step has become more annoying over the years.
What's great about it: Transfer from previous year
What's not so great: Often too clunky

2013 Tax Return with Turbo Tax
on April 15, 2014

I've used TurboTax (TT) for more than five years. Sometimes I've run it parallel to my accountant just to see how close we can get to each other's number. Either I'm getting better at it or TT is getting more user friendly every year. There are two options for completing the return. First option is for TT to walk the filer through the process step by step. This is really a great feature, especially for someone that hasn't had too much experience in preparing returns. The second option is available for those that want to pick and choose the sections that they want to work on. I like this option the best because I can skip around based on the information that I have on hand. This is especially useful if I come across some additional information and need to go back to a section that I've already completed. Lastly, even an experienced filer can miss a deduction or two. In filling out my State return this year, I picked up an additional $150.00 deduction for the Driver's Education credit that our state allows. I didn't know about the credit and if TT hadn't told me I would have missed it. That is what I'm looking for in a tax preparation software program. With the transfer of previous year tax return feature, The comparison process is simple. I highly recommend this program to anyone who hasn't used it before.
What's great about it: Simple to use for both experienced and inexperienced filers
What's not so great: Print options that would eliminate everything (including filing letter) would cut down on the paper and ink waste
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved
