Turbo Tax Review - 2013
on April 14, 2014

This version of Turbo Tax was: - the simplest to use to date - great step by step flow that made sense (this is very important to me) - easy to load data from prior years and thereby cut down initial data capture - I especially liked that it had the PIN numbers from the prior year's tax submission already pre-populated when I was getting ready to efile - I liked the routing numbers and bank name pre-populated as well. Think about it - by the time you are ready to file one could be a wits end. The ease in performing the final e-filing keeps it simple, reduces errors, and gives confidence to the user that the final filing was done without error.
What's great about it: Ease of Use; Great User Experience
What's not so great: Need Additional Explanation on Bequests; Schedule K=1

Turbo Tax Failure

Could not itemize state sales tax. Had loaded all the updates. Had searched all the Q's & A's. After waiting for 5 hours for my call back from Support, I called and sat on hold for 2 hours. Really nice CSR had me download my tax info to her and she got it to work. Too bad Turbo Tax just didn't work on it's own as it should have....And I paid money for this?
What's great about it: Gets through most features just fine
What's not so great: Hard to get answers

I'm no longer young. I've filed tax returns for 40 years and long ago it got to be a huge time sink. Doing them by hand on paper had its comforts but took weeks of work. Turbo Tax does a good job of walking me through the details appropriate for my fiancial affairs, lets me enter enough detail so I'll know why I entered a value if I'm ever audited, and the Federal version has pretty good advice along the way. The product gets more useful in later years when it can compare more and knows you and your finances better. I would prefer it remembered several years of charitable donations rather than just last years as we don't donate to all charities we admire every year, and it would save entry time to have a longer history of 'likely" entries. I also find how it describe's taxes related to cars #registration taxes# to be confusing for how my state lets towns tax vehicles. It seems like it knows I'm filing from a state that treats cars as personal property, but it talks to me like I'm from some other state. The Federal version could still improve by better coping with the widely divergent state sales, property and income tax methods and vocabularies. I amyear after year far less satisfied with the state product than the federal. You get what you pay for but it seems like all the value is in the federal product. State portion has immensely less useful contextual help and leaves you to enter values that it is not helpful in producing. Some of these troubles are clearly a result of the limited time available to build good software for so many states and the federal government each year. Some unimpressive moments are likely the fault of each state's odd rules. #try to list the make model and year of your car in 9 characters or your address for CT# I used a wide range of approaches and brands of software over the years, prefer TurboTax over the other methods.
What's great about it: Turbo Tax Deluxe handles most tax payers needs well for Federal issues and fancier versions helped me in complex years
What's not so great: However, the CT state form lack the depth of assistance, and clarity for what is needed. Ct less impressive than Fed.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

So Easy

We filed jointly this year for the first time, and Turbo Tax made it a great experience. It took just a couple hours to walk through the steps, itemize the deductions and e-file both our federal and state refunds. Would recommend this product to friends and family alike.
What's great about it: Step-by-step walk through; easy to read
What's not so great: Limited description of specific deduction questions (i.e. points on a mortgage statement)
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

I've used TurboTax a number of years now and the step by step through each income item then deduction item is a good format. There was a minor point of confusion I ran into - the auto import of the W2 had box 14 line 1 as "blank" so it kept making TurboTax think there was an error in the return. Meh, I was going to paper mail it anyway! Also when printing you can skip printing the instructions pages and the thank you page to not waste paper or ink.
What's great about it: Easy, get it done
What's not so great: A few import errors, default printing un-needed pages
