Great Tool

I am so pleased with Turbo Tax, as it would be impossible to prepare my own taxes otherwise. The step-by-step instruction has gotten better each year and I really like the explanation of what you are supposed to put in each of the boxes.
What's great about it: Step by step instruction, great explanations - help actually helps!

I have been using TT Deluxe to do our taxes and our kids'. I don't recall why, but I have been buying the disk version at the end of January, loading it onto the computer, then entering data as I receive it. I still procrastinate until mid-April, but the last review is pretty simple and stress free.
In the past I did them by hand, used professionals in two states, used other software, and let my husband do them. For our circumstances over the years #middle class, kids in day care then college, homeowners, no fancy investments# it suits our needs and hte price is fair.
What's great about it: fast, easy, carries over info from past years
Pros: I bought or sold investments

The excess deferral on 401Ks happens when people change jobs. TT should improve explanation on excess deferrals. Also the K-1 section does not have enough advise/help.
What's great about it: Perfect if no extraordinary circumstances occur
What's not so great: Any anomolies and turbo tax struggles

paid for the state transmittal then it would not allow me to transmit!

What's great about it: easy to follow and complete
What's not so great: wouldn't do my 2012 state taxes last year and this year couldn't transmit electronically

Previously my prior year information was available with the current year for comparisons. That was most helpful. This year that feature was missing. Please bring it back!

I mistakenly entered $250 miscellaneous income in two places, but I could never correct it. And it said I had missing data on a W2 and therefore could not Efile. However, I only had one W2 and nothing was missing.
What's great about it: Imports material from previous years.
What's not so great: Wouldn't let me correct a double entry for miscellaneous income.

More Clarity or Fix

just for example, I own an apartment building with 50% interest. I elect to have Turbo Tax automatically calculate my share of revenue, expenses and all matters reflecting my 50% interest. Turbo Tax does this except for cost of items to depreciate.
Please also have T-Tax self calculate the partner's share for items to be depreciated and, perhaps with a box that could be checked to enter a different amount.
Although T-tax states that you should enter "your costs", a mistake could easily be made that "your costs" are plural.... you and your partner's cost. Make this automatic to self calculate or make clearer in instructions.
What's great about it: generally quite clear and easy
What's not so great: Need more clarity on some items
