Late Oct Prep

For personal returns I do not see how a non-financial individual would be able to prepare a complicated return. Being a CPA, but not a paid preparer by profession, I was able to get by. Community help came to my assistance more than once.
What's great about it: Ability to switch between step by step and forms view
What's not so great: More than one area that got hung up

turbo tax 13

I do think that using this program was very helpful in getting information and possible deductions. I had a lot of uninsured medical expenses that might not have been caught without the program. The only drawback is it was not as intuitive as the H&R Block I previously used. But I may recheck the 2012 forms to see if I missed some things on them.
What's great about it: It did perform as advertised and pointed out added deductions and found errors or possible items not addressed by me
What's not so great: not as intuitive as H&R block I used last year

Gets better every year
on October 14, 2014

I've been using TTax for over twenty years and it gets better each year. (Doesn't require extensive knowledge.) I like being able to go directly to the area of the return that I want to edit or check easily. I especially like the final error and audit risk checks.
What's great about it: Multiple entry methods; Can review and edit by selecting specific parts of the return.; helpful tips
What's not so great: Should be able to take advantage of free filing when offered by state.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

I file two taxes through this process for several years. Easier to do than getting information ready for a CPA.
What's great about it: Asked questions I never thought about!
What's not so great: Some wording was hard to understand and took several readings.

Thorough Filing
on October 15, 2014

Good program, but the filing options and proceedures at the end are a bear. Need to simplify. You have several places where the return can be printed -- confusing. Should have just one or two screens with selections of what to print.
*** I never figured out how to set aside part of the refund for next years taxes. I gave up and decided I could use some estimated tax forms.
What's great about it: Colledtion of previous year info. Explanations of the required data
What's not so great: Problems with K-1's with the extra data items in statements.
