GENERALLY EASY

Overall quite good. But I own shares in an oil partnership which issues a Schedule K1 which is all but incomprehensible. I filled everything out as well as I could but there was information requested on my Pennsylvania Tax return which I could not find. I just filed and hoped for the best.

e-filing a hassle, too many clicks before the fail
on April 14, 2014
Posted by: NJtaxpayer22
Filing was a hassle. After doing all of the checking, the e-file failed when the Turbo Tax updates were not installed. We installed the updates, then clicked a dozen times (again) before we got the next e-filing fail message. Had to do a web search, find out that we had to use the installed version (not run TurboTax from a CD) and then we had to close and reopen Turbo Tax... why doesn't the e-file fail message just tell us that up front? We did three update checks and three fails (and three heart rending attempts to file) before a successful e-file. Some user testing would uncover this flaw... otherwise, the experience was not too painful.
What's great about it: easy to use
What's not so great: e-filing fails w/o updates... warning should occur earlier

Complicated Return Made Simple-er
on April 14, 2014
Posted by: TheTwoGs
I am fortunate to have a comfortable financial although complicated financial life. I am perverse enough to want to do my own bookkeeping and fill out my own tax returns, with CPA help only occasionally -- the last time was four years ago, resulting from an inheritance "situation" I did not create and could not avoid.
My world includes salary, pension, real estate, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, partnerships, IRAs, and a variety of "holdings". Some are managed professionally and the comforting pages of -DIVs, -INTs, -OIDs, -Bs, etc, arrive every Spring. Others I manage myself, and must create my own slots and boxes to fill in. For the return I just filed, the "Everything" file I saved runs to 195 pages.
Over the years, TT has not failed to figure out what box to put every number into, what forms-and-lines to use to accumulate the totals, and how to make sure the IRS knows what I am doing -- and I know what they are doing.
The simple act of tracking and recalculating every change I enter, in multiple places out to the final line on a 1040, is worth more than the price of the software. The peace-of-mind that comes from knowing I didn't misplace a decimal point or reverse some numbers, or put a minus where I should have put a plus -- Priceless!
What's great about it: Very comprehensive program didn't miss a beat with my complex financial life.
What's not so great: None significant, since I have to file taxes anyway.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

terrible software
on April 14, 2014
Posted by: Anonymous
kept getting an error message that the return could not be filed electronically because updates were necessary, I checked for updates four times and each time received the message that the updates were successfully installed, but the software still did not allow the return to be e-filed. What a waste of money
What's not so great: would not allow an electronic filing

MA Tax efile Problem
on April 14, 2014
Posted by: rogerm1943
I spent a lot of time trying to submit my MA taxes. I tried to do an update on April 10 but it said I already had the latest version. I saw someone's comment about requesting a second state and then canceling it. This finally solved the problem! I have used TurboTax for several years and this was the first problem I have had - but it really got me aggravated!
What's great about it: TurboTax is a quck and easy way to complete your taxes.
What's not so great: Problems efiling my Massachusetts Taxes

Outstanding

I am a former tax professional and continue to do a number of family tax returns. TurboTax gets better each and every year even when the tax code gets more complicated each and every year. I have absolute confidence in the software and actually look forward to using it.
It is a tremendous value and everyone should use it.
What's great about it: Incredible ease of use. Anyone can use this software no matter how complicated their tax situation is.
What's not so great: Would like to see free state e-file

We have a somewhat complicated return, several states with very different rules. Turbo Tax has done the best job consistently. You get what you pay for
What's great about it: Reliable results
What's not so great: Not foolproof, must watch every form

easier than I thought
on April 14, 2014

The cost of a tax service was killing me. A friend suggested Turbo Tax. It was easier than I thought. I like the easy questions you ask and the links to more info; However it was not as inherent as to how to go back and change an amount or to change the way I wanted to summit my sales tax deduction. I think I did it right but I had to "wander" and try a few things until I saw it change. I like how you have what your cumulative return is stated at the top of the page as you go along. Sometimes I wonder if the figure I am typing in is making any impact on my refund/taxes. It looks as if you will have me next year as well; but it would be nice to have a list of what I need to keep track of next year to make it easier... maybe you can base it on how the filing looked this year or ask some questions if I plan higher medical expenses, or if my daughter will be going to college, or selling my home etc.. so as I go along I can throw what I need in the "Tax file" right then instead of hunting it up over a year later. Yes to be Proactive... wouldn't that be great! ;-D
What's great about it: takes you step by step using easy questions and has links to more info, if you don't understand the "taxes" terminology.
What's not so great: still wanted a better way to ask a specific question I had.
Pros: I moved, I bought or sold investments
