Do It the Turbo Way

I am a programmer by trade and oftentimes tell people that we need to write our systems and processes as if this a Turbo Tax interview. Great job!
What's great about it: The interaction between my answers and the follow-up questions
What's not so great: Sometimes I get lost when trying to go back to a section and forward again.

I would use this again for the federal taxes, but maybe look around for something better to help with state taxes.
What's great about it: Very helpful with filing our federal taxes
What's not so great: It couldn't seem to manage the state taxes, though.

What's great about it: Quick, easy, not confusing
What's not so great: None that I encountered
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I have recommended Turbo Tax to my daughters and several co-workers when I was working. Everyone to whom I recommended your product tried it and liked it, except one person who continued to use his CPA. I especially like that it has included the software to detail donations for the past several years. I couldn't find any information on Form 1098-MA, so I trust that I don't need to report any information from that form to the IRS.
What's great about it: simple to use, covers a lot of topics, reliable
What's not so great: I wish it had more information tailored to the users; e.g. I turned 65 last year--any benefits for older citizens?
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Steps easy to folow

Being a first time user, I actually found it quite easy and fast to use. Took less time than I thought. Would be good at beginning before starting to inform users what needs to be prepared ahead, such as itemized medical costs.
What's great about it: Has explanation when don't understand a deduction, income, etc.
What's not so great: Confusing info with added costs - said 1 free state but at end had to pay to e-file. Which is it?

Really frustrated this time

Somehow your system in the past two years has inserted an additional line on my charitable donations worksheet and then reported an error since there was no information on the line. Actually several errors, since there are several blanks in the line. If there is no donation to report, there can be no error to correct. I cannot get rid of the blank line. I have a K-1 that reports negligible income and I have carefully recorded all of the information in the K-1. Apparently your system does not think the information is sufficient, and since it has found two "errors" it will not file my federal return electronically. I should be given a REFUND. This is INEXCUSABLE. Not what I bargained for or paid for.
What's great about it: Inspite of a few hangups, the program has worked for several years in the past
What's not so great: Inflexible
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Simple stuff simple, complicate stuff still not

TurboTax Deluxe makes simple taxes simple: W-2s, 1099-INTs, 1099-DIVs, mortgage deduction, charitable contributions, etc.
Data carryover from year to year is great - no need to re-enter information on sources of income, only the numbers. And especially the questions that want to know last year's values.
Other things not so great: a) Lacks clarity for educational expenses: what to do when the student covers the expenses seems to be significantly different than parents covering the expenses - TurboTax could be much more clear about who enters what where, ESPECIALLY when 529, etc plans are involved. b) Tracing back to the source of a calculated value: I seem to remember TurboTax being better at that in earlier years. Boxes on lesser forms simply say the value is Calculated, but does not take one to the source of the calculated value. c) Form 8615 (Tax for Certain Children Who Have Unearned Income) is STILL a nightmare. Fortunately my monitor is large enough to get two returns side-by-side, permitting me to read from one return and enter the values in the other (only two kids, fortunately). Seems like TurboTax could do most of that on its own - simply ask which returns need to be involved, then do it. d) Another major disappointment: I used to keep a lot of my notes regarding entries in the Supporting Details boxes and they would be included in the printed return for keeping. No longer - you can create Supporting Details boxes but they no longer print (at least I've not figured out how to include them).
Online support: I had a problem with a Notification that could not be gotten rid of. This morning I called TurboTax support. The hold time was only a couple minutes (on April 14!) The person was patient and helpful. She attempted to resolve the problem as we spoke. Ultimately the problem remained (the diagnostic copy of the return sent to TurboTax did not exhibit the problem) but she assured me that it would not prevent me from filing the return (by mail anyway).
What's great about it: Data carryover year to year, phone support
What's not so great: Handlng education expenses and 529 plans not clear enough
