Less glitz and more practicallity
on April 14, 2014

There are several things troubling about Turbo Tax as it has evolved. There is more attention to glitz and less to basic functions. For example, it seems silly to get congratulated for "maximizing my refund". Especially the amount in a given section comes out to a whopping $2.
Meanwhile practical functions don't work so practically. The "Continue where you left off" button in older versions took you back to the exact page you were working on. At least that is the way I recall it. Now it takes you back to the beginning of the major section you were working on.
Other troubling things creep in. Why does it keep asking me the name of my "Farm" when I have no Farm income. Maybe I accidentally clicked yes to some Farm question, although I don;t think so. But even if I did, there seems to be no way to undo that. I tried looking through the raw forms to find a Farm form to delete or a line item to delete but no luck.
Another example is that it skips on detailed information. For example, in e-filing you get back an email that says "You e-filing has been accepted". I think there were a few exclamation marks in there also; more glitz. But nothing that looks like a confirmation number. I can't believe the government doesn't provide one. Someone I know had a problem where their refund was never direct deposited. It turned out eventually to be an IRS problem but we had to do the phone call wait for TurboTax support to get the confirmation number. How hard would it have been to include that in the email?
What's great about it: Gets the job done eventually.
What's not so great: It feels like they are cutting corners as compared to older versions

We have been using turbo tax since 2006 and it gets easier to use every year. Transferring last years information into the new year really makes it less time consuming. We feel a sense of security knowing that with Turbo Taxes guided step by step walk through we are covered and our taxes are figured right.

Simple Fast and Easy

Overall it is a great help. The entry and automatic calculations are a treat to see as it all unfolds. I hoped for some further explanation on some of the categories for the deductions would be available. That is where some guessing came into place.
What's great about it: Laid it all out for a simple return. Most of the guesswork is gone.
What's not so great: Some further explanation of a few of the entry categories would be nice.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
