When I was in college, I used to do my taxes by hand. The long form. (It wasn't that bad, since the only reason I was using the long form was to report the AK Permanent Fund Dividend. Everything else was mostly a lot of zeroes.) Using Turbo Tax is much easier, even though my life (and therefore my taxes) have gotten a lot more complicated, and I still get the same sense of satisfaction when I press "File My Return" to transmit my returns electronically that I did when I slid my finished paper return into an envelope and dropped it in the mailbox. I also love that I can import things like W2s and last year's data. I have been using tax software for the last 20 years, and while I have tried both of the major brands of tax software, I tend to come back to Turbo Tax, at least in part because it works more seamlessly with Quicken, which I am also a big fan of.
That said, there were still a few places that were not as elegant as they could be, and the help is sometimes less than helpful. I realize you're copying it straight out of IRS publications, but enhanced explanations of some of the IRS's less helpful "explanations" would be a great added value.
The other area I had problems with was when I reached the end of my return. The software insisted that I had left several areas blank that could not be left blank, even though it had not asked me to fill in values for them. I was then left trying to figure out what should go there, and having to manually work through that part of the form. It would be nice if, upon detecting an unfilled blank, the software could give you an option to go to the appropriate script to fill it out.
Other than those few minor issues, though, I have found Turbo Tax consistently to be a good product, and I will probably buy it again next year.
What's great about it: Super-easy to use and to file your taxes and get your refund. Plus, the cost may be deductable on next year's taxes.
What's not so great: There are a few places where the software is less elegant or helpful than it could be. (See below)
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Avoid early rounding up or down of dollar amounts
on April 14, 2014
Posted by: SamKarun
I have been using TurboTax for more than 15 years. In all these years, when dollar amounts transfer to state tax return from federal return always there occurs inaccurate adjustment amount of a few dollars in the State Adjustments forms. This is due TurboTax's shortcoming of early rounding off of dollar amounts. So, TurboTax should allow an option to not rounding off for people who desire that option. Please fix TurboTax to resolve this problem.---Samkarun
What's great about it: Amounts will transfer to State Returns without creating inaccurate CA Adjustments forms like Capital Gain, etc.
What's not so great: Currently, CA Sch D Adjustment Form always creates a few dollars of inaccurate adjustments.
