Well Done
on April 14, 2014

Well designed software that will walk the novice through the process, or offer rapid prep for the most experienced tax-filer.
What's great about it: Made the process as painless as possible.
What's not so great: I just don't like paying taxes. Period.

Taxes EZ-PZ

This is my third year using Turbo Tax and will continue to use it. It is very user friendly and gets me the same results that my accountant did. The first year I was a little leery, so I did both, and the results were very similar( I think it was $4.00 difference). This is my second year doing without my accountant. The step by step instructions are terrific. Also I do appreciate the 1040 - ES payment vouchers. They're exactly the same as what my accountant would give me. I had trouble with printing my returns when I got the email telling me my forms were available. I called and received prompt help and was able to complete printing my returns.
What's great about it: I really appreciate the step by step approach that Turbo Tax uses. It makes me feel smart.
What's not so great: I couldn't print when I first did my taxes and had to wait for an email. It is a very small negative.

Easy to Use
on April 14, 2014

I have use TurboTax for 5 years now. Not only to I receive a larger refund than when I used a professional tax preparer, but I pay a lot less. It is simple and easy to use. It allows me to be as exact as I need to be adding income from various investments, etc. without being overwhelming. If I have a question, the answers are timely in coming.
What's great about it: Asks questions to help maximize refund

Better every year
on April 14, 2014
Posted by: MartyKremer
Every year, Turbo Tax gets easier to use. This year signaled one of the greatest year-over-year improvements in interface design. In past years, stopping in the middle and revisiting an already completed section could become painfully difficult. This year it was a snap. It addresses all my tax issues and provides guidance on what the issue means to my tax situation.
What's great about it: Easier and friendlier than in the past
What's not so great: It's income tax, enough said.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Big Fan

I have been using tax prep software since the early 1990's and TurboTax since 1998. The interview format helps remind you of all the details and activities in life that could impact taxes. I like being able to jump straight to forms to see exactly where the information is going and the calculations that apply. The audit support, both in reviewing and the Audit Defense you can purchase is very nice. The five year tax history report is a good snapshot to review changes over time and assist with planning. As does the comparison to national averages. My only con -- when you revisit something in the interview process questions previously answered are often asked again without the original answer retained. A pain when two people have been working on the return.
What's great about it: Easy to use, accurate, Audit support
What's not so great: repeats some questions

Best Turbo Tax Ever!
on April 14, 2014

I could not think of a single con. In the distant past this program drove me nuts. Last years was almost perfect and this year is the BEST EVER!
What's great about it: Just the right questions & explanations and more only when you need it. It cuts the time to file in half.
What's not so great: No Cons!

Futures Trading Data Entry Needs Updating
on April 14, 2014
Posted by: NekotheTaxCat
Recommend that TT updates the futures trading data entry path. If one "invests" in the futures market (form 6781; section 1256 contracts; marked to market by the day), the 1099B from the broker, only shows one number (gain or loss) for the year. The many futures trades per day are not described in detail on the brokers 1099B. It would be helpful to ask if an investor is investing in 1256 contracts, and then jump to the Section 1256 page immediately. This is the 1256 path (no transaction detail is required). If one "invests" in the general stock market, the IRS wants to see the detail of each transaction made during the year. The broker and the investor have that transaction detail. This is the Schedule D path (investor provides all of the transaction detail to the IRS). The TT data entry process should get to a point where an investor can choose: (1) only path 1256, (2) only path Schedule D; or (3) both paths.
What's great about it: Tax Prep is Fast
What's not so great: Misdirection about Futures Trading and Stock Investing
Pros: I bought or sold investments

keep coming back

We use turbo tax since 2007 mainly because it saves us with the 'tax preparer' fee.
What's great about it: I like the 'copying from the previous year' feature. It makes entering personal information easier.
What's not so great: some 'edit' features needs to be deleted instead of the actual 'edit'.
