Good Job Turbo

What's great about it: quick and simple

What's not so great: no refund of electronic filing fee when I did everything right but return rejected.

Quick and easy

I have used Turbo Tax for over 10 years. I started using it when I was actively pursuing a home based business. It led me through everything I needed and gave me confidence that I could still do my own taxes. I no longer have a home based business, but still use Turbo Tax, because I don't have the time or energy to keep up with all of the tax laws.
What's great about it: Doesn't miss a thing
What's not so great: Can't think of any

Transmittal Failure

I was trapped in a loop of errors when trying to transmit my e-filings. I kept getting the message that my program needed to update. I would run the Update, get a message that all was current, and then the transmittal would fail again with the same error. I tried using the Online options and the manual update.
The on-line help that threw me to a long FAQ list was not very helpful. I had to wait for the help line to open, and when it was a few minutes late, I was getting unhappy. However, Rhonda, the person who took my call was able to help me. I was pleased that I had been connected to the correct person and did not have to be passed off to someone else.
What's great about it: Good Call Center Help
What's not so great: Font on some help screens was very small. Over all program seemed less friendly than prior years

So long Turbo Tax...

I have ALWAYS used Turbo Tax and generally file early. This year I was running late and tried to file on the 12th. After finishing, I could not e-file to save my life. And I've found TONS of people with the same "Validation error" for the last couple of months and you guys still couldn't fix it. It took myself, a software tech at my job, two different laptops and two different networks before finally getting it to file my return and no one knows what the fix finally was! I started a small business this year, you couldn't pay me to trust Intuit again. Not with my bookkeeping, budgeting, and definitely not taxes! I'm sure I'm not the only long time customer you guys are losing this year.
What's great about it: Packaging looks nice
What's not so great: Missing VEBA questions, constant bugs, exiling nightmare

Why buy Deluxe?

TurboTax manages to get you going and coming on the pricing for state taxes: pay more to have the capability AND pay for the privilege of filing. (Used to be "1 free state tax" including filing charges.) Adding a filing charge means adds about 50% to your total cost of using TurboTax. Recommend investigating other options even if you have to go through the hassle of not being able to import information from this year's TurboTax return when you sit down next year.
What's great about it: Electronic filing of state taxes
What's not so great: Turbo Tax now charges an e-filing fee even if you buy Deluxe
