Filing for a difficult year
on April 14, 2014

Overall the product is good for keeping your information in one place and allowing you to add notes as you go in the process. The step by step makes it fairly fool-proof for most users.
As a first time unemployed person out of work, I wish it went more into detail on using savings and IRA funds to get by in the short term. It handles the calculations, but I'd prefer to see more details in the explanations and examples.
I used Audit Defense last year, but after reading all the disclaimer instances did not this year, I came to the conclusion it's really only good for basic services, anything more complex and they have options to add additional charges through several exclusions. But it still might be worth it if you are in a high risk situation for audit.
What's great about it: TurboTax is great for keeping all the items in one place leading you through form to form.
What's not so great: Not as detail as i'd like for my case "filing unemployed" for first year due to economy.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

Not too shabby

Mostly breezed through filing the return. Liked that most of the data was input for me. Liked that data was transferred automatically into this year's return from last year's return and my bank accounts. Some of the Quicken transfer was helpful, although some information was miscategorized causing me to review and modify incorrectly transferred data. Review of quicken data needs to have more checks and balances before loading it into the retun.
What's great about it: Transferred data from last years return and brokerage info
What's not so great: Quicken data import caused some rework

Finished at Last!

I've used the Turbo Tax online version for several years. I like how it brings in last years information and keeps track of historical data like Mortgage points and IRA contributions. However, this year I purchased a downloaded version and couldn't figure out how to transfer my previous data. The online Help was not at all helpful. There we others that also complained about this. It only told you how to upload data from your computer to the online version, but not the reverse. So, I had to re-enter all of my data, and I didn't have any of the historical data mentioned above, so I probably lost some deductions I was eligable for.
What's great about it: Option for step by step questioning, or self-selection of topics
What's not so great: Couldn't figure out how to transfer data from Turbo Tax Online that I used the last year to the Downloaded version

Great guided product
on April 14, 2014

Did not appreciate the guided TT software did not state up front that the state tax software needs to be downloaded for $x in order to proceed with working on it. The Education Expense section (re: Pub 570) is still confusing in the step-by-step interview. I had to read through the Pub 570 to get some answers because the AnswerXchange was sometimes conflicting. When I thought (correctly) that I misentered something, I couldn't figure out where I had done it...I would go to the forms view and change the number on the form, so I guess it was handy to be able to access that.
What's great about it: Appreciated prompting and brief explanations
What's not so great: Not so easy to step away from the guided interview

POWERPLANTSUPV

It is detailed so it makes it easy to follow. I don't havta pay some schmuck to do what I can do on my own.
But it makes me go through all the entries before it tells me my AGI is too high for this deduction. It should look at the AGI before making me enter data. Example, if my income is too high for the education deduction, it doesn't matter what data I enter, I won't be able to claim the education deduction.
What's great about it: Detailed, easy to follow
What's not so great: Doesn't look at AGI before making me go throught all the entries.

Almost Perfect

For 99.9% of users, Turbo Tax leads you easily to the right entries. For us other 0.1%, it may just point you to an IRS publication that can only be understood by experienced tax lawyers or accountants: Not much help if you are a mere mortal! But quite understandable because of the complexity of the tax laws.
So unless you had to do something like depreciate farm equipment or used option spreads across tax years, Turbo Tax should be a painless way to file your taxes.
What's great about it: Lets you go back and enter corrections as you collect better data.
What's not so great: Just a few places where it asks you to enter data from the previous year forms that it already has.
