TurboTax: at home number cruncher

If you don't play well with accountants or other fans of number-crunching, TurboTax will let you grind your teeth in the peace of your own home. The pop-up info boxes are too small, with squinty print, and they cannot be enlarged. The ads for its products break your concentration, when all you want to do is get it over with!
What's great about it: Has brief explanations of the obscure tax code available
What's not so great: Did not automatically access last year's return and made me look everything up.

I will keep coming back. Every year it gets easier with all of the additional tools that are offered.

Great for Procrastinators

I always say every year that I am going to file early, but I never do..I usually end up , just like today, filing the day before , maybe on a good year two. TurboTax helps ease the anxiety I place on myself. Thank you
What's great about it: User friendly, great for last minut filers...
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Needs some work w/ Neat Software

Couldn't co-ordinate my Neat information with TurboTax. Once imported, it didn't enter information in proper places as designated in Neat. . . Not sure what the point is yet. Also had trouble linking disc TurboTax (purchased in store) with online account. No information connected before filing. Sure hope it does after I file so I don't have to re-enter everything. In filing state taxes, which military spouses do not have to do (depending on state of residency & living situation), it costs more to e-file than you get back. TurboTax, make it free e-filing for military spouses please! It's hard enough for us as it is, especially if spouse is deployed & unavailable during tax time.
What's great about it: Step-by-step & reviewable + changeable information
What's not so great: Neat software co-ordination needs work

Waiting and waiting

I would be going along fine and then it said it had to calculate and the program would freeze. The only way to continue would be to bring up my Task Manager and cancel the program and then bring the program up again. Luckily it always saved my work. Twice I got a dialog box from Turbo Tax letting me know that the program failed and asking me to send a response to Turbo tax to help identify the problem. I eventually finished my taxes but it probably added two hours to my session.
What's great about it: I've used turbo tax for years and it's always done well for me
What's not so great: This year it kept freezing up when it had to calculate.

Keep on improving

Each year improves but you could still improve on the ability to skip around. Add page numbers and enable linking to any page; when going back to a section, pull in all choices that were made (often radio buttons are blank and you have to re-choose; numbers are usually carried over, but you force re-entry of buttons, etc). Put a link at the bottom of each page at least toward the end of the process, that lets you link to view the actual tax form. The links such as "Why does this ...?" are excellent for helping in understanding but you need more of this. The page titled "Adjust Investment Expenses" had NO explanation at all of what you wanted here so please beef up this and other sparse pages as well. Marking certain items with "this is not common" is helpful. I missed this year seeing the comparisons with average numbers for tax payers in my category; why was that left out?
What's great about it: FAQs, Links, Explanations
What's not so great: reworking sections requires re-entry; number pages and allow links to a page

Easy Rider

Turbo Tax has been an excellent tool for me in filing taxes. I love the way it presents all the possible deductions with explanations should there be any questions. I liked the way it checked for errors allowing the opportunity to go back and make corrections. The 2013 Turbo Tax is the best one yet for me as far as the ease of completing the return. I was pleasantly surprised. Keep up the good work Turbo Tax. Perhaps 2014 will be even better!
What's great about it: It was so much easier to complete return this year.
