Surprise extra step for state tax
on April 13, 2014
Posted by: Marimbly
After I e-filed, it told me that I must mail in an Oregon Income Tax Payment Voucher, but the Oregon Income Tax Payment Voucher says DO NOT use the voucher if you use an electronic payment option. I thought I'd done so (why did I pay the extra $25 for the state one?) but now I'm not sure, and I'm having a hard time figuring out what's happened by revisiting what info is available to me in the software. If I DO need to pay by mail, I wish that had been made clear to me before I paid the extra for state filing.
I'm on the fence about whether I like the convenience of not having to fill out all the worksheets manually versus the confidence in my own work upon having filled out all the worksheets manually.
What's great about it: More convenient than worksheets
What's not so great: State tax payment process is ambiguous

Great software for taxes
on April 13, 2014

I have been using Turbo Tax for years. I absolutely love how taxes are made simple for my very simple case. However, I have one issue:
I have a K-1 Partnership that puts out information in an old form letter providing interest, dividends, fees, etc. There are no 1099-INTs or 1099-DIVs but just a sheet explaining what to put into Schedules A, B, D, etc. This does NOT lend itself well to the normal automated flow of Turbo Tax. I know you have the Forms entry (which I am forced to use for this) but it is inconvenient. If you could improve something, this would be it!
Thank you.
What's great about it: Auto-download of W-2 and financial institution information.
What's not so great: Practically no help entering data for K-1 Partnerships
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Excruciating glitches
on April 14, 2014

I have been a Turbo Tax fan for years, convincing numerous friends to use the software, but today, I may have lost faith. The federal was a breeze. The state, however, failed to transfer over the majority of my W-2 and 1099 data fields. I was presented with a list of lank, or nearly blank forms, requiring me to add the names, EIN, addresses, etc. of most of the W-2s and 1099s. I was presented with blank 1099 OIDs and 1099Rs, that were not applicable to me. Trying to move forward merely deleted the W-2 and 1099 data I had already entered, some two and three times. Very frustrating...my faith in the product is well and truly shaken.
What's great about it: Federal was a breeze
What's not so great: State mired in issues
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

39 Errors on review

I inherited my mineral rights and therefore did not invest money but you ask if I did and I answered wrong on four 1099-Misc.
I answered I did have a HDHP which I did in 2012 but when I went back to say I did not for 2013 it wanted to still know if it was for myself or my family? I do still have a HSA.
putting a nickname on this review is a B'
What's great about it: Down loads of W-2, and fill in the blanks
What's not so great: Trouble with terms

Good but needs improvement
on April 14, 2014

Program is good but still needs improvement. For example, tell people that the question about having foreign stocks does not apply to those in your mutual fund. One page does give that info, but another does not. And the worst offense was when I accidentally checked YES that I was making an amended state return. Nothing I could do after that would let me change or correct that answer. I tried the back button, but that page was gone. I tried everything. Two hours later after being on hold one hour for Tech Support, the support guy was able to help me delete the state return info entirely and start it over. A simple back button that would let you go back to the page would have saved a lot of time.
What's great about it: Customer support once you get them
What's not so great: No back button if you accidentally say Yes to Amended return
