Federal Version is GREAT; State Versions Lousy
on April 13, 2014

Directions were contradictory for states about which return to do first. It always had indicated to do the non-residence first, but then in CA it indicated I needed to do AZ first, since it was asking questions that could only be answered after doing AZ, e.g., AZ AGI and taxes paid. States also ask questions of things I have answered in past years that take a lot of time to dig out from past returns, e.g., a long-since fully depreciated rental, they ask what depreciation method was used and for how many years (when I'm not even claiming any depreciation... TT should carry this info forward.
What's great about it: Federal carries forward all information, saving time and effort!
What's not so great: State versions don't carry forward info from prior years; only info from the Federal input.

transferred repeatable data from previous years perfectly. all i needed to do was follow instructions. only had a couple errors in the final review, etc. easy to fix.
What's great about it: Got it done! Even dummies like me can complete it.
What's not so great: hard on the eyes.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Working Through TurboTax Problems
on April 13, 2014

I encountered a problem I had seen before and apparently was not fixed. I qualified for 100% state tax deduction on my federal retirement pension. Turbo Tax would not make the adjustment. I had to manually enter it into the state 1040 for it to be applied.
Also the e-file experience was bad. After numerous attempts in which it suggested that I had updates to load (I had updated repeatedly), I gave up and returned a few hours later. It finally went through.
What's great about it: Transfer from prior year return
What's not so great: Software glitches

Turbo Tax 2014
on April 13, 2014

I've been using Turbo Tax for my tax return for years. It's always easy and fast. But this year's Turbo tax had two gripes: 1. Forms are not available 2. Validation failed for MAC - can't do e-file. After I finished entering all of my data, the last stop it said the forms were not ready. So I could not file the return. I have wait for forms ready and update. I've been checking every day. Still did not work until I re-installed Turbo Tax. Then the "Validation failed" message came out. I tried 5-6 times to get and install updates (with Turbo Tax disc in computer). It never work. I had to search Google to find out a way to make it work. This type of frustration never happened on previous year's Turbo Tax software. What happened for year 2014? Why was it not running smoothly?
What's great about it: Easy to enter data
What's not so great: Forms not updated, Validation failed for Mac
