Still one of the simplest methods

Previous versions of TurboTax seemed to be better but as various tax laws change and have become more complex over the years, the application doesn't seem to adapt as well. Resulting in the possibility of a drop in accuracy. Otherwise, still a great product and would recommend to those with a straight-forward filing. However, those who feel they may have a more complicated filing, should consider a professional.
What's great about it: Simplicity
What's not so great: Lingering doubts about accuracy
Pros: I bought or sold investments

So, so program this year...disappointment

Very poor explanation of tax law or requirements was included this year. Difficult to discern what information needed to be entered without doing extensive research via the IRS to accurately enter the information. There simply was no instruction. I could have gotten that by just trying to fill out a paper form from the IRS. Also, if there are limits as to what can be deducted based on income, each section that has a limit should prompt you of what the limitation is which would avoid excess time spent collecting and entering information only to discover that a certain income level prevents a deduction. (i.e.: education expenses prompted but job expenses did not) It is unlikely that I will use this program next year.
What's great about it: Relative ease to negotiate program
What's not so great: Limited or no tax information/details provided

Need to improve user experience

The first issue was when entering EE treasury bonds. It didn't feel right because the input screen was genericized for all stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. For example, it wanted an exact purchase date, but treasury bonds only report month and year. Should I use the first of the month? The last? The mid-point? This screen could use some work to reduce confusion.
During error checking, it was found that I was marked as being a student last year, even though I said I wasn't.
The second issue came up with EIC after completing my return and being asked if I wanted to check for additional deductions. When asked if I wanted to check for EIC eligibility, the default response was "Yes (Recommended)". This was despite the fact that the wages from my W2 were well over the maximum EIC-eligible income of $46 000 and I'd claimed no dependents. The default here should based on information previously given. The question probably shouldn't even be asked if the income and dependent qualifications aren't me. It's not like the answer here is based on new information.
The final issue I had was when e-filing. After submitting for transfer, I got an error about block 10 on my W2, which was $0.00. Apparently the transfer protocol doesn't allow a $0.00: it must be >=$1 or blank. Since a user is just going to enter what's listed on their W2, TurboTax should take care of blanking this field if necessary, not tell the user to blank it.
I recommend that Intuit do a better job with user testing, using well-defined use cases.
What's great about it: Meh
What's not so great: Confusing input screens; Exposes technical issues best not shown to user
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

annoying scroll bars
on April 13, 2014

Used to be better.
last few years, I have been annoyed by scroll bars where the only thing hidden is the Continue/Next button. Put it in the title area or some other visible area and get rid of the scroll bars when possible. And, on some pages page down does not work either. You have to use the mouse to scroll. Very annoying.
Also, annoying to have to keep saying no to "import from" on 1099. Eventually it gives a checkbox "do not ask anymore". Why not have the checkbox when the first time someone chosses not to import?

This is my 3rd year using TurboTax, so it is getting easier to follow and be comfortable using. It is nice that all of our banking/investment institutions are now included and the info needed to complete the slightly more complicated stock trades is imported.
What's great about it: Fast, clear & easy to follow
What's not so great: Would be nice if some simple stock trades were included in the Deluxe Turbo Tax
Pros: I bought or sold investments
