Had a Challenge with a Bad Business Deal

I engaged in design services with a client-- I performed X number of hours with that client, for an agreed upon fixed price fee. In the end, the client rejected the work and refused to pay my fee. I performed the work as agreed, and lost the compensation.
I did not pursue legal action against the client because of his social proximity to my extended professional network. But I lost income that I earned. I had hoped to better understand how to recoup this non-payment by declaring it a loss.
As an independent contractor, I was unable to navigate how to register this loss, specific to this client-- and how to keep that apart from my 1099 Misc income reports. The percieved audit risk was "high" which made me shy away from bothering to report it at all. The difference in my total tax refund re-calibrated from $337 to $200. So, in essence, I feel that I lost money yet again from a bad business deal.
I am sure that I didn't have a clear sense of how to best handle this-- but my reluctance to flag a potential audit risk kept me from declaring a legitimate business loss. My suggestion would be for a more personalized approach for the independent contract work section in cases where a 1099 Form is not applicable.
What's great about it: TurboTax helped me to avoid making a bad situation worse

Turbo Tax is very user friendly

I have used Turbo Tax for the past few years, it looks for every deduction you can take and even checks if you are at audit risk.
What's great about it: Takes you through all of the steps.

Although I have used TurboTax for years, I probably won't in the future. There were multiple places where I had to back track because the app did not ask me a question it should have. There we basic programming issues (can not download state update without administrator approval?). After all reviews were completed and OK'd I wanted to print my return it said there were multiple errors with my return.
What's great about it: fast
What's not so great: no longer intuitive

I have been a loyal TurboTax user for many years. I continue to be impressed with enhancements to the product.
What's great about it: easy to navigate
What's not so great: too cutsey at times (rocked my refund?)
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Easy to use

I love using Turbo Tax. It makes preparing my taxes each year very easy. I like that the information from the previous year is entered automatically.
What's great about it: Stepped me through the process and converts my last year's return.
