I started with online version and was switched to the download, and it was confusing throughout as to whether we could do multiple federals and multiple states and how much it would cost. When I typed in the question, I got the "you can do as many returns as you like" answer without any information on cost...I didn't get that until I was ready to file. I began not to trust the product because it felt that that information was being hidden until it was too late to decide to do a paper return.
What's not so great: Struggled with navigation

Big Surprise
on April 13, 2014

I believe I have used Turbo Tax every year except one in the last 20 years. I have generally had a good experience. The last couple of years I have been frustrated by the directed tax entry. It asks questions that sometimes I have no idea how to answer. But I can deal with that. This year however I was shocked that I could not deduct my IRA contributions or my Daughters College Tuition! I finally found out that it is because my MAGI (I still do not know how to calculate that) was above the limit. The program must have known this but instead of telling me, it just gave me a list of possible reasons and I was to investigate each one to find out which one it was. Very frustrating. It would have been helpful to know up front that I would not be eligible for these if I made over a specified amount. However even when I found the reason the dollar amount that was the limit was never listed in Turbo tax. Yet I am sure the program knew what that limit was. Right? Anyway here I sit on the Sunday before my taxes are due and I owe a large sum of money that I had not planned on so this is not a good time to ask me to write a review of your software.
What's great about it: It kept me from claiming things that I should not claim
What's not so great: I could not find anywhere why it was denying my deductions.

Turbo Tax for Mac NOT User Friendly
on April 13, 2014
Posted by: HG45
I have been a Turbo Tax user for MANY years, mostly in the Windows environment, doing my family's taxes. No significant complaints. I'm now in my 2nd year in the Mac environment with Turbo Tax Deluxe and it has been a pain in the neck. Often difficult to navigate. Haven't found 1040EZ when that's all I need for some. Several attempts required to file Federal electronically. Kept saying not able to file due to updates - when no updates were available. Etc! I'll be scanning the field next year!
What's great about it: If you are a seasoned user, you normally can move through the process quickly.
What's not so great: Far too many "bumps in the road". Can't always go directly to area wanted.

Tried Turbo Tax

Every time I wanted to add an address to one deduction had to page through all the places I had donated to. Used HR Block in the past because it was cheaper but decided to try Turbo Tax this year. Will go back to HR Block next year. HR Block easier to enter.
What's great about it: Ease of entry
What's not so great: Deductions a hassle
