Imagine taxes without TurboTax

The program works great -- it is the tax code that needs work. There is no way it needs to be so complex . . .
TurboTax does fine with the Federal and State tax forms, and this year it seems to handle local school income tax add-ons, but it has difficulty handling our crazy Ohio local income tax system, administered by RITA (Regional Income Tax Agency), which is a ridiculously complex web of taxing you where you work and where you live.
What's great about it: Makes short work of a difficult task
What's not so great: It doesn't handle RITA very well.

Not the same

We are doing both - Renting and own. We were living in different locations because of work. You don't allow for that.
What's not so great: You assume that both taxpayers live in the same state together all year.

Good, but could be better

Not as good as previous years.
I couldn't figure out how to input W2 information. I had to add W2s with all employer info that should have pulled in from last year. Then I deleted the ones that the system was anticipating from last year. Last year the program presented employer info simply and just asked me to input new wage and tax data.
Calculating sales tax is messed up. Last year it was just a click or two.
I really love Turbo Tax, but I hope next year will operate more like previous years.
What's great about it: Quick calculations and running total of expected refund.
What's not so great: Sales tax computation not available right away. Still not sure how I finally got it.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

I have used Turbotax for years and it is far superior to doing on my own or using another tax program.
What's great about it: Easy format and data entry
What's not so great: none really

I had always used online turbo tax, but this year decided to buy the cd and file by mail due to the recent internet issues. I found the cd a bit difficult to figure out initially (couldn't determine which link would lead me to the tax program) but finally found the correct file and it worked out well.

Obviously, it's a mature and polished product, quite easy to use, helpful and largely free of surprises. (Two years ago it crashed on me and led me to very frequently saving, but that has never occurred again.)
There was one place where I spent quite a bit of time itemizing professional expenses (professional memberships and publication purchases) only to be told at the end that I was under the limit for that particular itemization. It would have been nice to have been told at the outset that "You will have to have $XXXX of expenses in this category for this deduction to apply. Do you want to continue?"
Also, clicking an earlier tab when you're near the end of the filing process (just to check on something) leads you to have to click through many intermediate steps changing nothing just to get to where you need to pick up the process of filing.
In any event, it's hard to complain about this product. It does what it does and does it quite well.
What's great about it: Very smooth, very few surprises
What's not so great: Garden Paths; Backing up can be tedious
