The Only Way To File
on April 13, 2014

As taxes get more and more complicated, the choice is seeing a tax professional or using Turbo Tax. Turbo Tax keeps you in control, explains every line, and looks for all the deductions. You can't get any better than that.
What's great about it: Guided every process
What's not so great: none
Pros: I had a baby

Got lost a couple of times

Instructions for Form 8949 reporting capital gains & losses is not very clear in terms of what is reported to IRS and not reported. My 1099s referred to it as "covered" and "noncovered," it took me a while to figure out what to do. At first I thought I only needed to report the totals in each category, then I figured out that I had to report each transaction in detail. When I got to the "print forms for filing" part, I skipped over printing to save as pdf, then I had a problem getting back to the actual print screen. Then I realized that I had to go to the "review pdf box and actually produce a pdf and then print that. I had to enter my state data twice because I closed out the program and when I reopened it, It had not save the state entries.
What's great about it: Accurate and thorough
What's not so great: Got lost a couple times

Works well, but needs work in one area.

Works well, relatively easy to follow. Would benefit from a guided line-by-line review at the end. For some reason it had my IRA contribution listed as non-deductible; when I reran that section, the problem was corrected. The foreign accounts section needs work.
What's great about it: Laid out well; forms look very good
What's not so great: Has problems in the foreign account reporting section

Turbo Tax allowed me to evaluate what impact a contribution to my 401(K) had on my taxes and showed me the impact of a qualified retirement savings credit via form 8880.
