Many tense moments since the program hicups.

I used TurboTax many years since 1990 and thank for it a lot. But over the years, tax rule and my tax became complicated, and recently, I encounter many confusing areas, or maybe, bugs in the program, especially in the areas of foreign earned income section and self-running business section. For example, once a wrong form is created somehow (I don't know why and how but it did), it does not seem to go away even if I go back and repeat the interview. I had to really learn what was happening and had go to the false form and manually erase it to rid the error. But it required that I spend days to learn what was going on in the program pulling my hair. I think it may be a bug in the program. However, your program is great, and saved me a lot of effort especially when I file tax from a foreign country while I am on leave. I especially like your easy way for e-filing. However, there was an episode there too. I almost panicked when I saw a statement from the program that I need the 6-digit personal ID code issued by IRS at the last minute. Since I am away from home this year, I did not receive any code and I did not know that I need it to file the tax. Then, somehow the program does not ask it anymore when I actually e-filed through TurboTax using our personal IDs that we made in the past when we e-filed through TurboTax. I don't know which one is correct; do I need the IRS issued number or personally made numbers are sufficient to file the tax? Maybe, the IRS-issued code is needed only if I file directly to IRS. Then, the program should say so. At the 23rd hour from Asia, I was in panic for a while. If possible, I need answers for the two issues I described. I wish there is more help when errors show during the error check. I did not know why there were errors and certainly did not know how to correct them. In such cases, the program would be great if I know exactly what is happening, but if I don't know anything, it is sometime very difficult to use. I think you intended the program to serve a tax-illiterate person like me.
I hope my input would be usuful for you to make the program better! Thanks
What's great about it: I just have to answer questions, and the program does it all.
What's not so great: Error check could give more hints as to how to correct the errors.

Great Tool

Only improvement I can suggest is clearer handling of Simple IRA company and matching deposits. I misunderstood for 3 yrs and had to file amended returns and one yr was past the 3 yr deadline so lost that amount. The step by step does not make it clear how to handle these deposits and what is deductible. Still love the tool and have used it for many years.
What's great about it: Fast, easy way to do your own taxes
What's not so great: Confused about Simple IRA Deductions

Not as easy anymore

I have been using Turbo Tax for over a decade, including years where taxes were much more complicated than this year. However, when I filed this year, I did not feel confident that the return was complete or correct. Somehow the logic has become more convoluted and less automatic. I had an issue with a Roth IRA I had withdrawn contributions from and this was taxed at first until I recorded that I also put the money back--this ended up labeled as a "rollover" which is not technically correct. The discussion forums were full of inaccurate and conflicting advice and non-responsive to my simple question. At the end of the process, I had to submit the tax forms 3 times to get it accepted because it complained that turbo tax needed to be updated. Each time, I had to go through the same dozen screens instead of simply retrying to submit.
In the past, I was able to sit down and just go through the entire interview sequentially--completing my taxes in about half an hour. This year, I found that process did not really work as I was bounced back to the main screen at times and not sure where I left off with many values pre-filled. It was correct, but the flow was confusing and tedious to navigate.
I can no longer wholeheartedly recommend this product. I am an attorney by training and for years I told people, don't waste your money on an accountant, just follow the steps in Turbo Tax. I am thinking next year, I will sit down and do the taxes on paper like I used to do back in the dark ages before the Internet because the IRS forms can be parsed sequentially and that way I will know I have not left anything out.
I wish I could be more specific in the areas besides the Roth IRA issue I ran into to help your QA team improve the product, but it is more a general impression that your product is not as robust as it used to be. It's not easy anymore. Like I said, I have a lot of experience with Turbo Tax--I used it for years when I had my own business and had very complicated taxes. This year was easy by comparison...but it was not easy in Turbo Tax and I have never felt the need to click submit (3 times!) and hope for the best.
What's not so great: had to review manually
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved
