2013 tax return

Did not understand why I could not get the Sales Tax deduction. Should explain that itemized deduction was less than the standard deduction and sales tax deduction is applicable only when itemizing deductions.
What's great about it: Easy to follow instructions

Gets the job done reliably

The product does a great job of handling complicated tax laws and formulas, particularly at the federal level. It's ability to carry over information from previous year's tax forms and to carry federal information onto state forms saves a great deal of repetitive entry. Where it falls down is in a few quirky areas of user-unfriendly interaction and, more seriously, in its handling of the Alabama use tax that is included in state tax forms.
For years TurboTax has placed its "continue" buttons way down at the bottom of the page, even when that means that there is a lot of empty space between your last key-in or check-box and the continue button. On almost every page I have to scroll down to access the continue button. I have complained about it in the past but it has not changed - it must be intentional, although it makes no sense to me and causes a good bit of wasted time.
Another unfriendly aspect is that when switching between the questionnaire view and the forms view, when you return to questionnaire, it may not be in exactly the same spot as where you left off. Similarly, when you need to go back and change something, it is hard to access the one spot you need without sometimes having to navigate through unnecessary pages.
Regarding Alabama use tax, which is added to one's state income tax to calculate the total tax due: When I got to the page on the Federal interview to enter information from my 1099-G for Alabama state income tax refund from previous year, it pulled over info from the previous year’s tax data. The information did not match the 1099-G. It then asked if the information is correct. The available answers are yes, no because I amended my return after filing, or no because Alabama changed my return. None of those answers applied! The number was incorrect because they did not take into account that I paid Alabama consumer use tax on the state income tax form last year. When I went back and added that consumer use tax amount to the amount of the refund then the sum matched the incorrect value reported by TurboTax. I was able to resolve the problem by clicking the incorrect answer “Yes the information is correct” and then using the Edit capability to edit the number. But the number reported by TurboTax was incorrect.
On this year's entry of consumer use tax, the software showed that purchases totaling up to $2500 would be listed in one location and then those beyond that amount would be listed in a different line. I used a supporting details form to add up all our family's purchases, and it totaled more than $2500. The form ignored the $2500 limit and entered the entire amount in the "up to $2500" entry line. I would have expected it to automatically stop the amount at $2500 and move the remainder over to the correct line. When I saw the mistake I went back and manually determined a set of supporting details that when removed would reduce the amount to just below $2500. I took them out by hand and re-entered them in the correct category.
What's great about it: Handles all the complicated formulas, laws, and calculations. Uses previous year's form to avoid lots of re-entry.
What's not so great: Has a few user-unfriendly quirks. Doesn't always handle Alabama Use tax correctly.

Overall a really nice product: quick, easy to understand, & accurate. Only a couple places that I found confusing (such as self vs. employer contribution to HSAs) but we _are_ talking about taxes here!
What's great about it: Simple & quick

TurboTax is so friendly, I can prepare both Federal and State Tax Forms in less than a 8-hour work day. The friendliest thing is how you can close, take a break, open and start exactly where you left off. It keeps you well informed along the way.
What's great about it: Friendly, straight forward, and step by step.
