I have been using Turbo Tax over 20 years. Never had a problem, never been audited. Will never use another tax prep package or prep service.

A bit complicated

Overall it is a good tool. However, as compared to previous years, this year it was confusing at times. For example, I had to inquire about where and how to enter my calculated state sales tax amount instead of using the IRS determined average $ value. The second problem was that it was not obvious where to enter my Identity Protection PIN.
What's great about it: Nicely categorized
What's not so great: A bit confusing at times.

Decent but frustrating experience

It is the program that everyone uses because it works well and available on Mac. But, this year's had problems and I had to keep going to the forms to fix them. For one, it kept thinking I needed to pay a tax on a state return from last year. I had to go into the forms to change this. Same thing for a scholarship that I received that I owed money on--to the forms. It finally reported it correctly, but no easy place to use the step-by-step to report that I could find. Then the opposite occurred. Tried to use the forms (got used to them) for getting a deduction on health insurance for a small business. But it would not let me, so I was back to the step-by-step, searching for how to get that entered. I figured it out but a lot of time waste.
Then at the end of the day, after working through it, the program kept saying there were updates available and so would not let me efile. I had to restart my computer and save the file as a new file. That finally worked.
Despite this frustration, I probably will use TurboTax or a competitor because it does the calculations for you. And that is a lot of comfort.
What's great about it: Does all the calculations for you
What's not so great: Wouldn't file because there were "updates available"; used the forms a lot
Pros: I had a baby, My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Overall, the step-by-step guide took us through every permutation of our tax-related finances and almost seamlessly translated the data onto the 153 pages of worksheets and IRS forms that documented our tax return. We encountered only two minor problems: the "error check" and the "E-filing PIN". The error check, after a few of the normal errors found and corrected, reported the return was error free. However, some business miles calculated in the guide process did not transfer through to Schedule C, which we discovered when reviewing the 153 pages. The instructions for the E-filing PIN were contradictory and confusing. Our last year PINs appeared in the set-up windows without explanation. I had to go look up last year's record to determine if the numbers were from 2012 or newly generated for 2013. Then the pop-up explanation said I could just pick any 5 numbers as my new PIN. However, when I clicked "help" and went to the Turbo Tax Help Center, the featured FAQ provided a phone number and link to obtain the 2013 PIN from IRS, which I did. Confusingly, the IRS-issued PIN appears on a page which I printed out for my records identifying it as a 2012 PIN, not a 2013 PIN. Now in possession of three possible PINs for each of us #joint filers# and knowing a wrong selection might cause IRS to reject the filing, I hopefully made the right choice by using the new PIN from IRS. I've crossed my fingers until I get the "accepted" e-mail.
What's great about it: Walk-thru guide even better than last year; a painless way to complete 150 pages of return and worksheets.
What's not so great: Obtaining our E-filing PINs was a challenge
