In the privacy of my own home, did my taxes without knowing anything except my personal facts.
What's great about it: Total use of someone else's knowledge.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Accurate

Minor quirks aside, it's accurate and pretty easy to use for our non-trivial federal and CA state returns. Nice that you can switch between "easy step" and forms to verify any confusing instructions.
Minor quirks: * Awkward navigation to community income/withholding adjustments (requires to file as RDP, navigate from Federal "Other Tax Situations" through "Done with other", community..., continue). Would be better to include a community income/withholding adjustment in the "Other... situtations" menus. * Inconsistent positive/negative treatment, where community income additions and subtractions are both entered as positive numbers, but enter community withholding adjustments requires positive additions but negative subtractions. * Somewhat unrefined in its treatment of the "mock" federal return on for joint RDP CA state return. It should know that the mock return shouldn't be filed, but suggests to do so. * Confusing phrasing at times, e.g. if you have community income/withholding adjustments, it "found errors in your return" but "fix errors" just notes you have to file by mail instead of electronically, then recommends to recheck for errors. It should better distinguish between correctable errors and such notices. It would also ideally recommend the file-by-mail option instead of defaulting to file electronically if it knows you can't file electronically.
What's great about it: Accurate, comprehensive, easy
What's not so great: Needs better mobile complement, minor quirks

Thorough and suggested things I would have missed

I expected no refund or worse, but things that I did know helped me get a refund in excess of what I spent for the software and processing charges. A win for everyone.
What's great about it: Quick and very easy to understand
What's not so great: Additional state charges could be less, but still worth it.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

Great Software

The RMD screen asks whether the amount I took from my IRA was the exact RMD or was more than it. Why? Does that matter? Then it asks how much my withdrawal exceeded the RMD, but doesn't offer any advice on how to calculate the RMD.
What's great about it: Thorough - Easy to use
What's not so great: Trouble with the RMD screen

Still Improving!

I've never found Turbotax to be completely clear about copying returns. Getting better, but always confusing. Now it appears that one has to print a second copy to get PDF "Save" options on one's computer. Just ASSUME everyone should want to review via printed copy before e-filing. Then ASSUME one keeps that copy and needs no more. Then ASSUME everyone wants Turbotax to save the return on their computer.
Charity handling MUCH better. You could still work on how to treat the case where one prepares meals for a group.
Where you don't have an option to "back" think again about why not, especially in the printing and saving and reviewing areas.
Thanks for making such a good product in such a difficult field of tax law.
What's great about it: Clear explanation (Finally!) of the thorny issue of treating Master Limited Partnership (MLPs) schedule K-1 reports
What's not so great: Cutting me off from "Saving" my return in PDF unless I print another copy of my return.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

No refund, no fault

I love beginning with the guide, then going back on my own to add or change things. The product is getting easier for doing just that. Being able to enter at a mid point in a given topic would also be helpful. For example, if I want to add a major item purchased in the sales tax portion, I don't want to answer the preliminary questions regarding sales tax each time I return to the section.
What's great about it: I've used Turbo Tax for years. This year it ws easier to flip back and forth between "Use guide" and "I'll do it myself
What's not so great: When in the midst of a topic, need a better way to skip parts to what needs changing.

Bad Year for Turbotax
on April 12, 2014

I had one hecl of a time trying to pull up my forms. I started them in Jan and by the first week of April I could no longer pull up turbotax from the desktop or my Win7 Menu. Then it just wouldn't pull up anything. I reloaded the program. The records were still there but the state then dropped out. This was a very frustrating year after years and years of using turbotax. I don't have Win8 yet so I'm debating whether I want to use TT next year after this headache this year. I finally got help from the help line but it took three downloads for it to finally work. I'm still not done, I have one more return to go so I'm not sure I won't run into anymore program problems.
What's great about it: Most inputs are self explanatory
What's not so great: College student 1099 employment Misc info is a bit confusing. Program kept detaching from my documents.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
