TurboTax Deluxe

I have used TurboTax for several\ years and it keeps getting better. You have the choice of filing out the forms yourself or answering questions. Although--or maybe because--I majored in tax in law school, I enjoy the ease of answering questions. You can always switch to view the forms to see how your answers are recorded. I highly recommend TurboTax whether you struggle with the ever changing tax code or are a tax preparation expert. I suspect many tax assistance offices use TurboTax. Why pay tax preparation fees when you can do it yourself with TurboTax. Try it. You'll be glad you did.
What's great about it: Inexpensive, easy to use, up-to-date information, good access to forms and help
What's not so great: Not necessarily a good choice for complex estates, Subchapter S corporate income, or complex foreign earnings
Pros: I bought or sold investments

What's not so great: Entered med insurance deductions in 2 places by mistake and Turbo Tax did not catch error and I couldn't easily fix it.

Pleased, but confused by 1099-Q interface.
on April 12, 2014

I have been using Turbotax over a decade, and have always been pleased and assured by its advice. This is the first time that the interface asked me to enter data from a form--the 1099-Q--while the online tax-tips indicate the data should *not* be reported on a tax return. Specifically, online "Guide to IRS Form 1099-Q: Payments from Qualified Education Programs" at: <https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/tax-tips/IRS-Tax-Forms/Guide-to-IRS-Form-1099-Q--Payments-from-Qualified-Education-Programs/INF19500.html> says ~7 paragraphs down, "For most …beneficiaries, the amounts reported on the 1099-Q aren't reported on a tax return." The interactive program interface did not advise the user of this, or give options to report or not report. Confused, I went to IRS Publication 970. Buried on p.57 it says "The…beneficiary generally does not have to include in income any earnings distributed from a QTP if the total distribution is less than or equal to adjusted … expenses." In the end, I deleted the information from my 1099-Qs, that I had entered in Turbotax. I would rather Turbotax had confidently 'held my hand' through that decision as it always does, though, or told me not to enter it in the first place subject to other data. In spite of that, thank you for a great sanity-saving product, generally.
What's great about it: Turbotax has always been a God-send, however...
What's not so great: The 1099-Q interface and online tax-tips seemed to contradict

Awesome Quick and Easy
on April 12, 2014

Generally filing my taxes it the one of the worst time of the year for me and my wife. We generally take 5-7 days trying to get our return completed. This included reworking, a lot of erasing and over and over QA.
This year we chose to use TurboTax Deluxe Edition 2013. Boy are we glad we did. This year we spent less than 3 hours completing our return !!! Not only was this in record time, we also got a big "Warm Fuzzy" knowing that our chance of audit was near ZERO :)
Next year and the years afterwards we will be using Turbo Tax.
Thanks from your new Turbo Tax customers. VanInIrving and his wife Mrs VanInIrving !!!!
