Did I get my billion back?
on April 12, 2014

While I've used Turbotax for nearly 10 years, there is room for improvement. For example, the deductions for charitable contributions are confusing. It'll ask if I'm finished with the deduction and when I say yes, I'm not returned to the list of charitable contributions.
When the transfer from last year is made, the term "edit" is confusing. There needs to be a more intuitive way to update.
I feel like the software is reliable, fairly easy to use, trustworthy, dependable. I like the hyperlink helps by many of the items.
What's great about it: Transfers information year to year
What's not so great: Not as intuitive as I'd like

How to Avoid Agrivation

I have been using TurboTax since it first was sold. That was when I was using a dot matrix printer. The printed return was not accepted by the IRS and I had to enter the information on the 1040 forms. Then the IRS accepted an improved TurboTax return. Not long after that you provided the tax return on approved forms. Can't beat doing the return with TurboTax in lieu of an accountant. I also use Quicken.
What's great about it: Very orderly
What's not so great: Ain't got any
Pros: I bought or sold investments

CPA review

User friendly, except for the MAJOR flaw of having to go through multiple screens just to get to a specific screen to change one field (for example, if you want to change the amount of Meals Expense on my Schedule C, one must go through EVERY screen related to Schedule C, such as automobile expenses, income, etc.). This is extremely painful.
What's great about it: completeness of 1040
What's not so great: have to go through many screens to get to specific settings wanting to change

Easy to use overall

Very easy to use overall (much better than doing by hand!). One item that could be improved - In 2012 I had rental income. I used Turbo Tax to fill out the forms. I really could have used more guidance on the "car expenses". Filling out those forms was very hard and the system provided little guidance. Happily, in 2013, I indicated early on in the review that I did *not* have rental income ito report for 2013. Yet it still brought up all the car expense forms as though I did have rental income. It was a nightmare to wade through all those car forms and try to get the system to stop bringing them up. When you have a change like this year over year, it would be better if the software recognized the difference then asked you if you had car (or other business) expenses to report. Maybe it doesn't associate the two but it was so tough to get through all the Error Checks that were coming up on account of this item.
What's great about it: Step by Step Guidance through each item
What's not so great: Changes in income year over year aren't driving forms presentation accurately

Somewhat cumbersome

Just finished my taxes...04/12/2014, why wasn't the State sales tax form ready? The IRS didn't have it ready, however, Turbotax did not "update" in the beginning of the program as in past years, but waited until the end. Guys this does make a difference when you have a pile of paperwork and are trying to get the order of things right. Instead of going through each and every deduction (ie 4 of 10), give us a place to opt out once we have finished our deductions, I don't children, I don't own a second home or an RV.
What's great about it: As always, efficient, proficient and rapid
What's not so great: Did not have all forms, did not feel as streamlined as past years

I have used TT for many years to do our taxes, but if the update process doesn't start working as it should I will look for another solution. Please address for next year.
What's great about it: The questioning and steps are helpful.
What's not so great: The automatic updates won't work and it is becoming a huge pain to try and do it manually

This is the fourth year I've used Turbo Tax. You have an excellent product. Please keep up the good work and enhancements!
What's great about it: Everything except Local Tax Section
What's not so great: If possible, try to include Ohio's RITA. This section was difficult to navigate through.
