Thank You Turbo Tax!
on April 13, 2014

I really appreciate the fact that Turbo Tax is mailed to me in Nov of the tax year and that each time I open the software, it automatically updates. The product is exactly what a non-tax law knowledgeable person needs. It guides you every step of the way. The free filing option is very nice as well as the offer of Audit Defense. I feel comfortable with my 2013 taxes being done right. Thank you Turbo Tax!
What's great about it: Ease of Use, clear directions and definitions, excellent help available.
What's not so great: Needed a form that wasn't available early in 2014

very thorough step by step instructions. Even if you don't have all of your documents organized, Turbotax will prompt you and list what you need. You can step away and get your documents, then proceed.
What's great about it: user friendly, screens easy to understand and navigate
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

This was a terrible version this year. Will likely not buy again. No help through the states (several confusing areas).

It's Called Turbo for a Reason
on April 14, 2014

I'm old enough to remember when taxes were an all weekend event. I would stock my refrigerator with Cokes and lay in a supply of ingredients to make multiple plates of nachos--my reward for doing this irksome, frustrating job. It was my annual tradition. Now I barely have enough time to warm up the oven--so I don't. I'm done with my taxes in an hour or so and I head out to my favorite Mexican restaurant and let someone else do the cooking. None of the frustration and all of the reward.
What's great about it: Simple, Easy to Understand, Speedy
What's not so great: Still trying to think of one.......
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Turbotax interface- making taxes more frustrating
on April 14, 2014

It has been helping me get my taxes done for quite some time, but as computer-human interface has evolved, Turbotax has not kept up as well. There are nice simple ways to skip over 'wizards' or guidance sections, but if you do so it's either difficult or impossible to go back. Navigation gets mixed up in an awful way, often just starting completely over, including re-entering personal info and w-2's MULTIPLE TIMES and such is easier. Even if trying to see if it's best to file jointly or separately, just a simple estimate is not doable without starting over.
Simple interface quirks like that stack up, including:
-Where the saved files are at, they show as huge icons in a small loation, they can't be shown as a detailed display, with name, date last processed or something important like joint/single or indicating complete stages
-It's easy to skip around to other points to get things done, like say some deductions you have ready, but if you go back in, it's often hard to track down or easily spot what you've considered DONE. The program indicates if you LOOKED through a section, but you can't personally check things off on the program yourself.
-when going threw a category to renter some information, it doesn't give you the option to cancel your changes, or compare the differences(or go back to previous entry). You'd have to remember what was where, or just reenter the whole thing since it's hard to peg down where the save of an entry starts.
- Hovering the mouse over the number at the top makes the income/deductibles etc breakdown appear, but it automatically times out and disappears. Why doesn't it stay when you hover your mouse over it?
If 'change' is a frustrating thing for clientele, offer to run the software in classic vs modern, or something of the like. My case is simple and I'm having these problems, maybe I'm just doing this because I'm afraid of how much it would cost otherwise at some other tax preparer.
I hope my feedback is helpful and fruitful. The on-the-ground software people are probably understaffed and underpaid to meet my ideal changes, but I hope on their behalf you do before demand tips out of your favor.
What's great about it: Has quick links to reference material
What's not so great: frustrating to enter things

Disappointing
on April 14, 2014

TT still costs a lot, year after year, but never fixes bugs and annoyances. For instance, there is no way to enter the location of a childcare business until you reach the error check, and no way to stop it *always* asking you in each section if you want to walk though it step by step - I must have clicked 'no thanks' 30 times at least. Still keeps bugging me for my contact info *every* time it launches, and still no way to do a keyword search of my return without printing to PDF and doing it that way. Really disappointing, no progress at all on the user friendliness.
What's great about it: Still works
What's not so great: Never fixes problems,
