Stumbling Through The Return
on April 11, 2014
Posted by: padomijj
I have been using TurboTax since 1997 and this is undoubtedly the most difficult I have used. The program works fine as long as you follow along the step by step, but if you have to get out of the sequence to make changes, then the fun begins. It seem like the program has gotten more difficult to navigate when you exit the planned step by step program. It seems like the software has become more difficult each of the last few years.
What's not so great: Difficulty navigating through the return

I am over 80 and was able to follow the instructions well. Explainations for questions were helpful. I liked being able to work on it at home and on my time schedule. I would recommend Turbo Tax to all young or old.
What's great about it: Explainations were pretty clear

after e-filing it read copy and mail 'this is necessary'. yet when go to EXPLAIN THIS we get an ambiguous answer. I think this response needs more clarity!
What's not so great: E-file rather hazy

The biggest complication of my tax return this year was that I received in 2013 a distribution of an excess contribution to my 401(k) plan in 2012. TurboTax totally ignored this 1099-R distribution but did not explain why or what I needed to do about it. The software probably assumed that I needed to file an amended return for 2012, but it did not offer me any guidance about that.
What's great about it: Very simple, straightforward layout and questioning
What's not so great: Asked for too much detail and required too much time for data entry. Also, it did not address an important tax issue.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Not enough guidance for 1099 income
on April 11, 2014

In assisting my son works 1 parttime w2 job and a couiple of 1099 income jobs, we found it difficult to understand if it was required to pay business tax on the 1099 income. This additional tax is burdonsome and he has no business expenses or employees. It seems like there could be another option. TurboTax does not offer much help in this area and I will probably have to get outside help for this situtation whic I find annoying.
What's great about it: Overall straightforward for simple tax situations
What's not so great: Difficult to review individual forms, Too much one size fits all

Turbo Tax 2013
on April 11, 2014

It was not obvious that I needed to go to Forms to change some basic input data. It took me a while to figure that out.
Software updates should occur at the beginning of use, not half-way through.
When state tax forms are not required, quite asking the question again and again.
Overall, great package.

Simple Taxes

Good software for completing taxes. If you use it each year it saves time by not entering the information that is carry-over. The state is included but efile is expensive. It makes it difficult to print and send state taxes.
What's great about it: Uses past data for quick inputs. Simple to use.
What's not so great: Pushes state efile which is expensive
