Excellent again!

I've been using Turbo Tax for years. It is relatively simple, yet comprehensive. Once the first year has been completed, subsequent years are relatively easy. For example, when starting my 2013 returns, they are automatically partially filled-in with relevant 2012 data. Like most folks, my year-over-year returns are not really different from one-another, except for the actual numbers filed, i.e., same employer, same banks, same charitable contributions, etc. Changes year-over-year are easy to make. I recommend Turbo Tax.
What's great about it: Transfers last tax-year info to current-year. Easy to use. Explanations are understandabe.
What's not so great: None.

Loved the Ease

I tried another FREE tax filing one year and did not have the detail questions that Turbo Tax has to help us get the best return. The other FREE filing would have us pay Federal taxes. I then had to purchase the Turbo Tax but it was worth it! We paid a lot less than we would have with the other tax service.
What's great about it: Walk through helps the ease of filing
What's not so great: none
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

What's not so great: Can't think of a thing I didn't like

Like wading through mud up to the knees

I did not like just "trusting Turbo Tax" to cover things and blindly follow their lead when two different tax treatments meant wildly different tax results. I tried my level best to understand how I was supposed to use 1098-T (tuition) and 1099-Q (OR 529) forms. I spent a full week sorting through screens, spending probably 30 hours trying to do all I could to do it right. I finally read the fine print so many times on so many screens that it began to be clear that my college student child needed to be considered independent in order to use those forms correctly. His income due to one summer job went for schooling and living expenses. He still gets taxed for part of it by the state and no money back from Federal which seems really rotten since he's devoting himself to education that is expensive enough and will benefit the country and state far more than low-motivation drop-outs ever will. If the tax code has changed that much, so the country isn't even going to support its college students by not taxing them, we are in a world of hurt and tipping point entitlements. Turbo Tax wasn't that helpful in the long run of sweating through the tax code and I'm still worried my family has paid too much in taxes this time.
What's great about it: At least I could keep checking the topic list and circling back to make changes
What's not so great: No way to really figure effects on my tax burden due to college student needs

We've been using Ttax for several years. It's easy...I'm glad because I "inherited" doing my own taxes plus my parents after my father could no longer do them. thank you turbotax!
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
