I've been using TurboTax for over 10 years. It has been great for doing taxes for self-employment and investment income. Being able to import data from my brokerage firm is a life-saver.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Disappointed long-time user

I am a long time user but I had a bad experience this year. The returns failed to transmit 4 times before it worked.
What's great about it: pre-filling
What's not so great: failed to send 4 times due to update failures

Great Value!

I've had my taxes done by an accountant for several years and then I have done Turbo Tax in other years. I do the same amount of work in getting all my receipts together with either one. It makes a whole lot of sense to save the money and just use Turbo Tax.
The program is easy to use and you can stop at any time and go find the receipts you forgot and nobody has to know. If you left half your stuff at home, it means another appointment with the tax guy. This is a whole lot easier to do on MY time line.
There should be a warning at the beginning of the instructions to go to the "Online Drop Down" menu and get any updates that have come out. I didn't realize that and had to re-do a section. Never had that happen before.
I've got four grown sons in a "sales tax only" state. I buy the program each year and then pass it around. You can send in five federal returns using one copy of the program. It's the best use of fifty dollars I've ever seen!

Easy Peazy

The step by step approach forces a methodical gathering of all related tax materials. The ability to get explanations at every step helps understand the income tax process.
When I finish, I invariably resolve to gather the data on a quarterly basis - maybe this year!
What's great about it: easy to follow, thorough, peace of mind
What's not so great: still takes a while - but much less time without the rapid help of the software

Not as good as it has been in the past

I had to update no less than 10 times in order to file my taxes this year. For some reason the update did not install until after several reboots and attempts at updating. The past two years have been getting rougher and rougher with the install and update of the software. This year, not only was there a problem with e-filing but there was also a problem when I tried to pick up where I left off when preparing. I had to re-enter several pieces of data a couple times and click through many screens over and over again. Just pure frustration this year.
What's great about it: taxes are done
What's not so great: way too many hoops to jump through
