Ambiguous Interview Questions-Awesome Phone Help
on April 9, 2014

The questions in the section for 1099-R are misleading and ambiguous. If you state that you are receiving an distribution from a retirement account due to a death and earlier in the process you state that you did not die during the year, then obviously the retirement distribution could not be due to your death. However, the first question regarding this distribution asks if I- and it names me by name - was a public safety employee, but meant was the person who died a public safety employee. Turbo Tax then asks about the DOB of the "person" - but it never specifically ID's the person. Again, in this case it is the original annuitant TT wants because otherwise there would be a penalty for with-drawing the money. So at this point one is lulled into thinking all questions are about the original annuitant. But no, the next question asks if the "person" received regular distributions prior to 2013. Well obviously at this point they are asking about me because the original annuitant is dead.
The other issue is that the program treats property tax and state income tax differently. A 1,000 change in state income tax with-held has a different impact on my refund than the same change in paid property taxes.
But, other than these issus, TT is great.
Also, the telephone assistance is awesome. After I located the error, I called TT to let them know. I was connected to a tax attorney. We went line by line through my return to make sure I had not done something wrong during a 3 hour conversation.. Note: when I phoned regarding the Interview questions, the first person I spoke to was not knowledgeable. However, when I phoned back 10 minutes later, I got a very engaging person.
What's great about it: Easy to use, transfers info from prior year, awesome phone support
What's not so great: Interview questions for some parts are ambiguous and I located an error

Federal & State Tax returns are complicated and are getting more complicated each year. I do not have the time or patience to study and learn all the ramifications of the tax law. I want something where I can get all the documents together required for filing, input them in a tax return system that easy to use and Turbotax meets those goals, U've been using Turbotax for 15 years and I'll continue using it because it simplifies filing my taxes
What's great about it: Tax returns are complicated. Turbotax makes it easy,
What's not so great: None

My wife and I have used TTAX for years and even though filling out all the information is tedious, it beats doing it by hand, and certainly beats going to an accountant with the attendant fees. We always feel comfortable that everything has been itemized and double-checked for accuracy and to prevent audits, so we rest easy at night, awaiting our state refund (we had to pay a little bit to the feds).
What's great about it: Turbotax walked me through all the forms one by one and verified their accuracy when done.
What's not so great: the IRS?

No helpful suggestions to finish my sprint to the finish. " Your Transmission Didn't Go Through." Before i was allowed to e-file, I needed to get an available update. Immediately I went to the Turbo Tax menu and selected Check for Updates. I checked several more times. Returned to the File section. Checked again for updates. No luck. Frustrated, I quit Turbo Tax. I stepped outside for fresh air and to spot the mars opposition. All was OK in the heavens. I wondered if I checked for updates BEFORE I moved on to where I left off would I get fresh breeze at my back? Yes! Yes! I broke through. Coincidence? No matter, I couldn't be more pleased.
What's great about it: All was terrific until the very last stride over the finish line.
What's not so great: I was stopped in mid-stride. So close.

I've been using the Deluxe version for the last 7 years. It's been rock solid from the get go. This is going to be the last year on XP. I'm really hoping Turbo Tax will be available on a Linux flavor next year: Hopefully some kind of Buntu.
What's great about it: Stable.
What's not so great: No Linux version.

When I needed to go back to a specific income, expense or deduction item the program made you go back to the beginning of a broad section and click through the preliminary questions to get to the summary page for that section to click on the item you wanted. If you used the back button then you had to also go through each page going backward. Also, either way there was often preliminary data previously answered missing which had to be retyped. Previous editions made it easier to jump back and forth. Also, prior to last year you could do a depreciation table on deluxe and Turbo Tax would pick up the figures from the prior years. I have even done that on basic in some prior years. It is not worth buying the business edition just for that.
What's great about it: Well organized Gets info to the right spot on the return.
What's not so great: Hard to go back and review or change a specific item.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I was not able to enter an auto at one tax rate and building materials at another tax rate. The were bought in different counties. One rate 9% the other rate 7.44%. I finally gave up and entered all of my receipts rather than the guided method.
What's great about it: Easier to use this year....Big improvements
What's not so great: Entering sales tax was tough
Pros: I moved, I bought or sold investments
