GETS BETTER EVERY YEAR!

I've been using TT for years now and this year 2013, seems to be very efficient time wise. I am a tax professional who can do tax returns without software, but why should I when programs like TT are here!!!
What's great about it: MOVES QUICKLY AND ACCURATELY

A step backwards

This year's TT proved to be the slowest, clunkiest yet. With more or less the same amount of data than last year's, adding transactions and data was horribly slow. Every time I added a number or a word, the software would stop and "calculate" for minutes at a time. For a software, it still is disappointingly "manual". I would upload a list of transactions, the software would fill in the 1099-B worksheets, and then would create a field that then qualified as an error and I had to go and fix page by page. Incapable of handling much data. In terms of guidance, one would key in information our of forms like K-1s. Later on, the software would request "additional information", "adjustments" that one had no idea where they were coming from or what to do with them. It is as if the software was designed to interface with tax accountants as opposed to laymen users who completely rely on it to do the hard calculations and translate the complex tax/accounting issues into easy-to-follow directions. Those requests are maddening, i.e. "Your entry in line 3a needs an explanation:. Line 3a of what??? What document? Which company? Nothing. No clue, no guidance, not even decent information. I am more and more disappointed with TurboTax. Rather than improving, it really feels it is going backwards.
What's great about it: Consistency vs. previous years, basic guidance, still easier than paper and calculator!
What's not so great: Clunky, slow, limited and poor guidance in a bit more complex issues.

Painless

I wish I had tried TurboTax sooner. We have always used a private agent and felt that he did a great job. When he increased his fees too much we asked around. Most of our peers used your service. We were pleased with your program and will do it this way forever. Thank you!
What's great about it: Program is super easy, gave me lots of time to enter data
What's not so great: Perhaps that my return takes longer than when my tax preparer does it.

Tougher than it should have been

The error review identified line 16b of the Home Office worksheet, but there was no way to enter the number that is derived from, so I could never get past the error. Had to do a manual override and submit return by mail instead of e-filing. Now I'm just crossing my fingers that I did it right! :-(

What's not so great: no links or directions about how to rectify errors found in review

Can you make the backdoor traditional IRA to Roth IRA conversion easier. If you answer one question wrong it screws everything up. Had to start over to get it to complete correctly. How about two questions: (1) Is this a backdoor Roth IRA Conversion and (2) Is any of it taxable?

Makes Tax Filing Easy

Kept getting a Form 1116 error. Had no idea what they were looking for. Had to fudge an entry to get the return completed. Couldn't e-file until all updates were downloaded. Had to close and re-open for downloads to register and e-file was then allowed.
What's great about it: Tracks history, prompts for relevant information, checks for errors
What's not so great: Extensive worksheets seem excessive, crazy Form 1116 error message

Always Easy

Very happy with the product. I find myself adding medical expenses many times, when I do this it takes me through many pages that are not changing. Could be better.
What's great about it: Make filing taxes easy
What's not so great: Sometimes repeats questions when updating sections
