Getting to the Bottom Line
on April 8, 2014

Everything went well except when I wanted to finish and E- File my Federal return. I got a message box that said errors needed to be fixed before I could E-File. The truth was I didn't make enough income, so I didn't need to file a return. It would have been nice to have had a box pop up instead that said I didn't need to file. It would have saved me a couple of hours of pulling my hair out. Kevin W. in Turbo Tax support was very helpful in explaining what it all really meant.

What's great about it: Easy Easy Easy!
What's not so great: Error messages said need to fix before I could E-File. Confusing.

Turbo Tax Review

I liked the software package overall, it's a good value for the price and affords the convenience of working at your availability. had trouble at first because I just re-started my computer after installing the software and had problems. After I completely shut down and then re-started everything went much smoother. I work as an independent contractor, in two different fields, the software wanted to lump all my 1099-MISC info under one category.
What's great about it: Step by step process, able to follow
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Need to be more specific in handling 1099S's. Many people in northeast are benefitting form the natural gas drilling in NY, PA OH, and other states and receive 1099S's for various reasons but not for the sale of one's home. The current TurboTax edition seems to address the 1099S situation with regard to home sales only. I believe you need to research the natural gas situation and provide a simple method for entering 1099S data to one's return for situations other than home sales.
What's great about it: Most inputs are straight forward.
What's not so great: Yearly format changes are sometimes not intuitive with respect to what the next step is.

poorly functioning state returns

The Wisconsin part year resident tax forms do not work. I spent hours trying to get it to work, until realizing that it was poorly designed and would never give me the correct answer. It was clear on your website that others have had the same problem, and it has not been corrected or addresses. I will not use turbotax again or recommend it to a friend.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

I tried transmitting both Federal and State returns via e-file. Was informed there were updates and TT couldn't transmit. Went back and installed updates. Still couldn't transmit. Submitted a HELP question and got 4 options for fixing the problem. Fortunately, the first one worked.
Hope this glitch is fixed by next filing season. I do LOVE Turbo Tax!
What's great about it: Very thorough, helpful explanations, easy to use even when returns are complex.
What's not so great: Updating the MAC version was taxing!

Prior T-T editions were better....

I had a pretty good and positive expectation of the quality of Turbo Tax that was why I have used it for almost 10 yrs now.
This expectation changed because of the many discrepancies figures were transferred from the worksheets to the actual figures e-filed. Below are some of the discrepancies and shortcoming of T-T..
1 . Line 74b &c, Form 1040 (Refund) - I changed the bank's routing and account numbers where the refund will be directly deposited. This wasn't reflected on the return e-filed to IRS, although the changed is on the saved PDF for records...
2. Line 75, Form 1040 (Amount to be applied to my 2014 estimated tax# - I indicated an amount from my refund to be applied to est tax for 2014 but this was not reflected on the e-filed returned...
3. Line 23, Schedule A #Itemized Deduction) - entries I made on Form 2106, Adjustment Worksheet, were not reflected on Line 23, Sch A that was e-filed...
4. There are a lot more figures to mention here that do not matched between the e-filed return and the saved PDF return....
I will be thoroughly go over my return again and might need to amend this 2013 return.... Further, I will be trying other tax program product for next year's return ..
What's great about it: nothing extra ordinary
What's not so great: e-filed figures did not match figures on saved PDF for records...
