Problems with excess Roth IRA contribution
on April 7, 2014
Posted by: cert13
I have used TurboTax for at least 20 years (since the late 80s or early 90s), but occasionally there are glitches with uncommon situations. This year the glitch was with returning an excess Roth IRA contribution and the associated taxable earnings. When I went to the Help discussions I found that others had the same problem and that several different ":solutions" were offered. I called the IRS and submitted the information they told me to. I could not override the amounts on lines 15a and 15b on Form 1040, which would have solved the problem.
What's great about it: Fairly easy to use
What's not so great: Did not handle excess Roth IRA contribution and the taxable earnings; difficult to find the explantions for lines 15a/b

Few Bugs, but good.

I had to seek support from user forums to figure out why Turbo Tax wouldn't allow me to eFile. I've never had ANY trouble with TT in the past, so I have high expectations. i was a bit disappointed with it this year, but I'll give it one more shot next year.
What's great about it: beautiful user interface
What's not so great: TT for Mac had some issues with updating, made eFiling difficult
Pros: I had a baby

turbo tax is fairly easy to use for average person filling out their taxes.
What's great about it: liked the easy guide
What's not so great: would have liked a little bit more written explanation on some items

How about having the next deduction/income section at the top of the list until finished and then go to the bottom. by the time you get to the last deduction/income you're scrolling down 3 pages.
What's great about it: easy to use. I like the step by step.
What's not so great: Entering income and deductions requires scrolling for next deduction/incom.

I've used TT for several years now, but with the tax law changes it was really difficult to get the 8615 returns for the kids to work. Although TT has always required hand entry of other returns on each 8615, there have been more entries as the tax law evolves. It would be really helpful if TT would import from parent to child etc.
Instead, some of the TT terminology doesn't match the current forms and you end up having to do a bit of research to figure out what is meant. Also, TT doesn't walk through the 8615 like the other forms, but pops over to a worksheet for direct entry.
More generally, I ran into a lot of snags this year, and I'm glad I have a background in tax prep and know how to look things up at the IRS website.
What's great about it: Does the calculations easily
What's not so great: Might have some programming glitches

being a first time Turbo Tax user I made mistake reading too much into some of the question, especially regarding my dependents 1098-T (difference between was reported b ).. the institution and what was actually billed to me ).
I did have very hard time deciding on which Turbo Tax version I required for my return.
What's great about it: no knowledge of tax forms required
What's not so great: invenstment deduction / dependent school deduction section not so clear

It's the easiest, most pain free way of dealing with your taxes.
What's great about it: Easy to use and comprehensive.
What's not so great: It's still dealing with taxes.

Have used turbo tax for years but feel getting less friendly and more complicated and inspire of getting pin numbers and confirmation number for 2012 the tax return never got to the IRS and Turbo Tax could not explain why. Then this year didn't even recognize my husbands SS numb and then kept telling me the state and zip code off my W-2 form was incorrect.
What's great about it: Liked being walked through and look for deductions
What's not so great: Kept going over the same things missing over and over even though the errors were corrected
