The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
on April 7, 2014

As usual, it does a good job on federal returns. There seemed to be a fair bit of improvement in the state return (California). Seemed less cryptic in some areas.
It was tricky figuring out how to E-File my federal return and print the state return for mailing, though I finally found it.
It was annoying that continuing with my return did not return me to where I stopped. I had to move through several screens to get to where I had been.
What's great about it: Works well and similar to last year
What's not so great: Difficult to print state return when E-Filing federal. Continuing always repeats several screens

I have used Turbo Tax for more than 20 years, and have been satisfied with the ease and accuracy of the software.
Next year, be more specific about the e-filing charges during the purchase process.
What's great about it: Easy to use and accurate
What's not so great: None

This was the first year I helped my husband file the return. I found the questions and form easy to follow. The input from last years forms also added security as we were processing the information. I liked the way financial information could be downloaded into the document.
What's great about it: easy use
What's not so great: need short narrative of changes from preceding year

Great, until the end

Software worked great until the end. Had problems in the e-file. TurboTax stated I needed to go back to update and update the latest files, I did that several times. Each time I was notifed that I needed the latest update. After three tries I just printed and mailed my tax forms in.
What's great about it: Fast
What's not so great: problem in the e-file

Again this year, I have had great success efiling the tax returns with very few problems on the review. You make it so easy for us non-tax educated people. Thanks!
What's great about it: It is so quick-I've done it in less than a day.
What's not so great: Too much information required on donations (business equip.)

Turbo Tax makes it sooooo easy. But... At one point, for my daughter's return, TT asked for information submitted to two different states. All the info was already in the system. Why did I have to go back to look up data? Second, PA exempts taxes from retirement. At some point TT asked to categorize a 1099R. 401k not listed as a choice. Third, was able to claim one daughter. Nothing explained that to me. Fourth, wasn't able to claim tuition/education for daughter. No explanation.
Otherwise, works like a charm.
What's great about it: step by step. organized
What's not so great: some terminology
Pros: I bought or sold investments

The only tax-exempt dividends (interest) that California allows are those from funds whose such dividends are at least 50% from California. Tax-exempt dividends issued by mutual funds whose total distributions are less than 50% CA tax-exempt are totally taxable at ordinary CA tax rates. As a practicality, mutual funds are either setup to provide 100% CA tax-exempt dividends or are national or global funds that have only a modest proportion of such CA dividends.
That said, in the Federal step-by-step process TurboTax requires one to laboriously go through every bond fund holding, manually calculate the percentage of CA tax-exempt for each, including those that are less than 50%, and then input the combined total of all CA tax-exempt, whether eligible or not via the CA 50% criterion. It would be far, far easier to simply input that which meets the CA 50% criterion; all other such dividends are not eligible for CA tax-exemption and so it does not matter whether they are from CA or any place else.
There may be an error in TurboTax calculations. Even after correctly and laboriously inputting all that TurboTax requested during the Federal step-by-step, my CA return showed incorrect amounts for that which was eligible and that which was not. I had to over-write the TurboTax values on the CA return to show the correct amount of eligible tax-exempt dividends. Beyond a TurboTax calculation error, it is possible that TurboTax wanted different input than what it asked for. TurboTax's wording of what is requested should also be reviewed to ensure it is clear and unambiguous.
What's great about it: Covers everything I needed in great detail
What's not so great: Confusing and difficult treatment of tax-exempt dividends for CA.
Pros: I bought or sold investments
