Fault in Software; verified by Intuit Tech Support
on April 7, 2014

I have used TurboTax steadily since 1988 and do not believe the program has improved into a premium go-to product.
Yes, the tax law is complex, but Intuit TurboxTax has had many years to improve. I don't think it is well developed. The Help screens are minimal at best; including examples.
There are cases where certain values show the origin of the linked data, however, not all linked data points show their origin, which hinders tax return debug, by not having the reference..
Every year I slog through TurboTax, pay more for it and can never complete the taxes in a timely matter. I find myself spending more time debugging the software than completing the taxes in a timely fashion. Filling out one's taxes should be as easy as filling in the data boxes. (BTW, I am very well organized and have the necessary info needed to fill out the tax forms.#
I seem to have issues with TurboTax every year and I had 2-issues this year somehow related to Foreign income, Schedule K-1's & foreign credits/deductions.
1. This tax return has a Schedule K-1 for an Estate/Trust. On the Federal Form a Schedule E, p2 #Partnership K-1 Worksheet# was created automatically. There was no reason that this Schedule E, p2 should have been created. I tried to delete this form Schedule E, p2, but it always came back automatically. #Note: this didn't show up as an ERROR in the TurboTax Federal.
2. The second problem was the Pennsylvania State Tax Return & Schedule K-1. The TurboTax program thinks the Trust K-1 is a Partnership. As a result, a Schedule RK-1/NRK-1 (Partnership K-1 Worksheet# appears as a form to be completed.
This "RK-1" form is not required and caused problems with the return. The TurboTax PA state thinks that a partnership exists, which it is not. It is an estate and therefore the Schedule RK-1/NRK-1 Partnership K-1 Worksheet is not required;
As a result, many errors appear on the Schedule RK-1/NRK-1 #Partnership K-1 Worksheet). This puts the program into an endless do-loop in the Review Mode and prevented me from ever getting through the Review Mode successfully.
As it turns out, this problem is known by Intuit, but has not been corrected. Previously these problems have been raised by many on the TurboTax forum without solution.
Tech support was very helpful and walked me through a process of deleting forms and recreating the K-1 form which corrected the above problems. The process was not intuitive, shouldn't have happened and only salvageable by tech support's efforts.
Unfortunately, using the process above, fixed those problems, but created another, i.e., changed the foreign tax to an itemized deduction versus "a credit." It took over an hour to determine that the foreign tax designation had been changed as a result of the form deletions, etc. I did eventually fix the problem.
What's great about it: Step By Step & Direct Form view is good and handles mathematical calculations when Turbox software does not have a bug
What's not so great: Does not handle foreign taxes and Schedule K-1's , resulting in errors in the Federal 1040 and State returns
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I did not receive my married filing joint deduction in my state return. Even when trying to edit my return there were no changes made to my return amounts. So how can I trust that my federal is correct!
What's not so great: How can I trust Turbo Tax
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Really Good Prep Program

I used to be an Authorized Tax Preparer and did all clients tax returns and had to manually select the proper forms and hand prepare them and had a numerous government tax books needed to prepare the returns. It took a long time sometimes days.
Since retiring, I now only do my own return, my Mother and my Daughter (you can file up to 5 returns on Turbo Tax Deluxe) and with a little spread sheet preparation (if needed, it only takes 1-2 hours even on a itemized return.
I've been using Turbo Tax for at least a decade and will continue to do so.
What's great about it: Easy Guide to Tax Prep.
What's not so great: Found none

I've been using TurboTax for a number of years. It is easy to use and I like that it asks for the forms you should have. However, when getting ready to print for filing, it is very confusing as to what to do to get your printout. The previous screen says "Print" then the next screen says "save as PDF" or "cancel".
What's great about it: Accuracy of calculation
What's not so great: Difficult to print - had to save as PDF in order to print
