Needs Work

You have to follow their lead. Any deviation is made difficult if not impossible. Fairly quick and clean if you have everything ready and haven't forgotten/left out anything. Doesn't always update correctly. Not sure if it is getting better or worse.
What's great about it: Quicker than 1040 long form
What's not so great: flying blind - they make it hard to do it your way
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Getting Better all the time
on April 7, 2014
Posted by: AndyB2014
This year's TurboTax was very streamlined and uncomplicated. I was able to move over all of my information from last year's TurboTax into this one saving a lot of repetitive entry. I have been using Turbo tax products for a long time and they continue to get better. The only thing I didn't understand was when I would leave TT and close it up, it would not immediately take me back to where I left off. I had to find my place each time.
What's great about it: Quick and easy to complete and file
What's not so great: Process should show progress on actual tax forms while moving forward.

Although have used for several years I still have trouble with some entries. This year it was the RMD going to charity, entering a K-1 from an estate trust and state sales tax on purchase of vehicle.. Also couldn't check tax rate in the IRS book.
What's great about it: Liked transfer from last year
What's not so great: Still some parts not intuitive

Printing State Return to File is Cumbersome
on April 7, 2014

Overall I am very satisfied with Turbo Tax. It walks you through all of your deductions. My wife has some non standard deductions she claims because of the work she does. It recognized all of them and made processing them a breeze.
One detractor that could be an easy software fix is making it easier to print your state return if you chose not to e-file it. The program did not offer the option to print it after e-filing my federal. It takes you straight to the review Turbo Tax screen and skips the state printing option. I had to go back to the file my return screen and choose print returns. Then it pops up with a screen that says you e-filed your federal and can't print it but offers the option to print the state return for filing with all applicable forms.
What's great about it: Easily walks you through all of your deductuions and credits
What's not so great: Difficult to figure out how to print state return for filing if you dont e-file it.

Not as good as last year

Does not clearly allow the option of filing the state tax by mail.
Confusing interface for printing and filing final return and mail in copies. You have to print from the pdf view instead of directly from TurboTax.
Insists on printing estimated tax vouchers without allowing the option of not doing them.
Does not clearly explain why estimated taxes are due or how to avoid them next tax year (i.e., by increasing withholding), it just prints the vouchers.
Wastes paper by printing one estimated payment voucher per page - they take less than 1/4 of the page, the rest is blank.
What's great about it: Works as advertised
What's not so great: Insists on filing state tax electronically, confusing interface at the end

When an error was found in the review process, the program didn't provide enough information to resolve the issue. I went to the HELP section and the same question that I had was on the page. Unfortunately, it had been their for a month. Also, it seems that you are expecting customers to answer the questions. It should be the staff at TurboTax that provides the answers since they would have the best knowledge. It should be done on a daily basis.
What's great about it: Easy to Use
What's not so great: Doesn't provide enough support
