Worth the price for anything beyond simple returns

Used to do returns for myself and others manually, but the need to keep up with tax changes and importing financial data made TurboTax very cost effective.
What's great about it: Keeps track of things from year to year.
What's not so great: Need to be very careful not to miss deductions
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Fleeced for state filing
on April 6, 2014

By law I must file regardless of the amount of payment or refund. Federal E-File is free. State tax forms are free from every state that taxes income. You can pick up a state form at your local post office. The cost of a state form online is almost the same as the cost of the turbo tax software. After paying for the privilege of obtaining a state form on line I find I must also pay for the opportunity to e-file it. The cost of the state form plus e-file fees exceeds the original cost of the software. The cost of e-filing the state form also exceeded the state refund by a factor of three. ouch!
What's great about it: Organised well and covers all the necessary points
What's not so great: prohibitive cost of state filing

TurboTax Saved Me Again!
on April 6, 2014

TurboTax is priced just right for this high school teacher. It saves me hours of time and then "remembers" all my information for next year, saving me even more time. It also saves me at least $200 vesus paying an inexpensive taxpreparer to do it for me. I enjoy the confidence I feel with this "hands on" method. This is my 12th TurboTax season!
What's great about it: TurboTax does all the thinking, I just make the decisions.
What's not so great: Hard-copy printing problems this year.

Always Great, but some improvements in order

I've used some of the other tax software & services, and I always find TurboTax to be my favorite. The interview process, explanations and help (and answers to questions) are straightforward. A few issues: I use the "interview" method of input. Sometimes the wording could be clearer. Sometimes it's one or two KEY words that could be made clearer by making bold to emphasize. I like the hyperlinks - those are helpful. In the area for additional job-related unreimbursed expenses, I accidentally input the data twice. One paged asked for the amounts, the next page asked for a description and the amounts again. I didn't understand the difference between the two pages. it's Deductible is awesome. I would like to see the ability to save and close, and when I return to continue right where I left off. It usually goes back to the beginning of the section, and not save the pages input, requiring to fill in the fields again. Finally, I'd like better clarity between the different versions, but for the most part I'm very happy with TurboTax!
What's great about it: Always the best in the industry
What's not so great: Some confusing pages; pick up where you leave off.

I changed MT filing method from separate on same form to joint status. went through checks to end and TurboTax said my filing was ready to go. Attempted to e-file, but TurboTax had not updated all the forms for my MT joint status.
What's great about it: easy to use
What's not so great: no errors detected, but forms were messed up at filing
