Tax Prep 2013

We have been using TurboTax for over 15 years. We tried another product just once and did not like it and went right back to TurboTax. We also use Quicken, so nice to have everything mesh.
What's great about it: Easy to use. Brings information over from last year.
What's not so great: Need to bring back right click for back up information and/or calculator
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Feels even easier this year than last

Every receipt that I saved for my business was asked for and used on my return. I feel like all the bases were covered and I got every deduction I that I deserved.
What's great about it: I like the way it makes me feel positive about doing my taxes.
What's not so great: I am self-employed, and the time to enter my business income seems to come fairly late in the process.

Some problems
on April 6, 2014

For several weeks, even as recent as a month ago, reviews indicated serious problems with TurboTax in making the procedure work (like not accepting State downloads), and I started about two weeks ago. Every time I logged on, I was started at the very beginning of TBTX, even though I had entered much information. Not knowing if TBTX instructions had changed, I started over - very time consuming. At that time, I had, as usual, some ambiguity problems - like my pension income on a 1099-DIV was claimed by TBTX to be an RMD payment, even though I thought I followed the instructions - later corrected that and TBTX said my response was "uncommon" (how can a pension be uncommon?). In at least two instances, after the "continue", I was taken back to a previous page already filled out. After several such "loops", I was allowed to go ahead. Finally this week, I entered again, and again had to go through from the beginning, but at least logging on today there were no further TBTX updates, and I filed successfully. I have owed a penalty, both Federal and State now for two years, even though I have tried to increase my withholding, and to no avail - - this is one place that TBTX might give helpful advice, This year, for the first time, I have been required to take the AMT, and did not get much specific help on how to avoid this.
I have used TBTX several years, and each time there have been similar, but not identical problems, causing much extra time, and in some cases actually countermanding the instructions, by going to IRS instructions, to get the correct answer.
Hoping for improvements,
John A. Kadyk
What's great about it: When the glitches seemed to disappear, the procedure for filing seemed to go fairly well, though not witout problems.
What's not so great: Only a couple of weeks ago, there were TBTX updates: start over!

I have used Turbo Tax for several years and have always found it to be a complete package that include different types of formats, editing tools, quick time and accurate calculations. Even though I have to pay this year, I am confident my payment is the minimum it can be.
What's not so great: Feel fees for efiling state returns seem very high when we are all doing our part to reduce the cost handling returns
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

If the AGI was displayed, the value of collecting the information to itemized could be estimated. When I review the retirement income work sheet a question popped up indicating that none of that amount was taxable. Thus I was very concerned. Mostly the experience was good.
What's great about it: Calculation for taxable portion of retirement income was calculated based on amount, ,Age and years.
What's not so great: The calculations were not displayed on the worksheet. I went to the 1040 after a lot of concern. AGI was not displayed.

Great Job This Year

I have used Turbo Tax for many years. It makes filing much easier. No questions were asked about renting instead of owning, unless I missed it. Am I allowed to take off for supplying items that the Landlord didn't pay for. Also, Renter's insurance; is this deductible?
I was late doing my taxes this year so I just kind of went through fairly quickly. I did check everything.
Thank you for continuing to provide a great service.
What's great about it: I liked that when listing deductions for charities, I wasn't asked for addresses. I
