Be an instant tax professional
on April 6, 2014

I have been using Turbo Tax for 16 years now and each year it gets even easier to use. Most people I know still use traditional methods for tax preparation, when I tell them I use Turbo Tax and my preparation time takes 2 hours or less they usually shake their head in disbelief. Thankfully they usually take my advise and try it the following year and let me know that they can't believe they didn't think to try it years ago. Great products, great customer support equals a great experience. I now purchase Audit Defense every year, I haven't had to use it but it sure gives me piece of mind. Thank you Turbo Tax for making me an instant tax professional...JB
What's great about it: Exceptionally uncomplicated, easy setup. I usually finish my taxes in 2 hours...
What's not so great: Can't think of any.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Very disappointed. Wouldn't let me efile but you charged me and I had to wait 30 minutes to get a refund that will take 3 weeks to process. When I print to file by mail I get two returns for the same State. Long time turbo tax user will be looking for other options next year

Box 6a
on April 6, 2014

I was unable to UNCHECK this box. I tried it twice and for some reason the program would not uncheck the box. I had to start a new tax return. I tried to call and of course I sat on hold for 10 mins and gave up. I did my return first and then my daughters. I checked 6a on her return and then I unchecked it but it seems once that is checked it can't be undone. I claimed her on my return but was not able to get the child tax credit. Can I amend my return and enter her student loan amount ? I don't know anything about taxes that is why I buy Turbo tax I hoped it covered everything but it doesn't.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Overall Satisfied

Overall TT is a great option for most tax payers. Turbo Tax can do pretty much anything those larger companies that help people with their taxes. Although the larger companies will save you time. So if time is important to you... let someone else do your taxes.
Regarding my "some questions misleading" statement. Last year I filed my tax return using TT. I claimed my child who lived with me until Dec 26. My child got married on Nov 10 but didn't move to be with their spouse until Dec 26. I also did my child's tax return as married filing jointly because the way TT and the IRS worded the questions (publication) it appeared that they could file a joint return and I could claim my child on my return as long as my child & spouse were filing to receive a refund. Well, duh!, of course they are filing to receive a refund. The terminology wasn't clear. If the question had been, "Will they receive a full refund of taxes paid and owe no taxes?" I would have caught that they should have filed separate returns so we could claim our child since we did support him/her for nearly the entire year. Of course the IRS won't allow a jointly filed return to be amended to change the filing status (I am 100% certain they do this because they know they are going to get people like me who misunderstand the "rules"). Then the IRS quickly paid my child & spouse their "due" refund but would have taken months (even years) to bring the error to my attention and charged me all kinds of fees and interest. Fortunately my child brought the increased refund to my attention. I immediately contacted a CPA to get the returns corrected and filed so I could minimize the penalties the IRS would charge me. Of course that cost me too, maybe more or less than the IRS penalties. But peace of mind was important. It is insane how the IRS can cause so much anxiety. If they had to compete for our business they might care.
Bottom line... It would be really helpful to other tax payers if TT would make this point more clear: Maybe something like..." Is your child filing a joint return to ONLY receive a refund of ALL the income taxes paid during the year and they will have NO TAX LIABILITY for the year?"
I hope Intuit will consider this for this questionable area as well of others I may not be aware of. I hope I can spare someone else the painful experience.
What's great about it: quick, pretty thorough
What's not so great: some questions misleading not TT fault, IRS vague

I'm always sure that the process will be satisfactory with Turbo Tax. Over the past few years, I have had no-stress tax preparation that I truly appreciate!!
What's great about it: Good explanations of the entire process just a click away.
What's not so great: Small annoyance at advertising for other services (IRA, Audit protection)

Life of taxes made easier
on April 6, 2014

If something is no longer on tax forms and was before, it must be removed from the summary charts because it is extremely frustrating when trying to get the taxes done and you think something is not working and you can't "fix" it.
What's great about it: Easy to follow; helped with finding relavant, needed information
What's not so great: Tax exempt dividends line is gone on the tax form but still in the summary chart. Very frustrating and confusing.
