fewer glitches, or is it my imagination?
on April 6, 2014

this is about 12 years for me, i think, so i'm probably not going to shop around for a different product. but once the schedule c goes away in another year or two it may be a different story....
What's great about it: love the schedule b and d downloads from my brokerage
What's not so great: why can't the software return the preparer to where he left off instead of to the top of each topic page?
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Almost good enough...
on April 6, 2014

Simple enough to use. However, I do a lot of accounting and would like to have a better way of cross-checking that the numbers entered are what have been picked up. For example, it said I should take the standard deductions and that I didn't have enough deductions. I would have liked to see a page that showed, all in one place, what were used for the deductions. I guess I'd like to see what is used to make up each entry. Also wanted to double check to be sure that I'd entered my tax withholding correctly, couldn't find a break-down of amounts by W-2. So I got out my old Excel spreadsheet and added up the numbers!
What's great about it: Simple to use
What's not so great: Hard to check if my figures are correct
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

E-filing problem
on April 6, 2014
Posted by: dizzylee
Did taxes with out problems. Refund due from state and had to pay into feds. E-filed state right away and waiting to do feds closer to the deadline. Went to do fed e-file and said had to update. Did this then went to e-file and wouldn't let me as said I needed to update, I had already done that so I went through the whole process again and tried to e-file again and it still wouldn't do it. So had to take the time and expense of printing out all the forms and mailing it in by mail. Not a happy camper!!!!!
What's great about it: worked well initially
What's not so great: fed wouldn't e-file

used wrong state tax form
on April 6, 2014

The federal return went fine and I opted to e-file for free. For the state return, however, everything went wrong. First, TurboTax itemized by AZ return even though I did not itemize my Federal return. The problem was that AZ requires that the (non-existent) federal 1040 Schedule A form for itemized deductions be included when itemizing AZ deductions. So I had to redo the AZ return using the AZ short form that doesn't use itemized deductions (and ended up paying more to the state). I had no option to manually edit the AZ long form to select standard deduction instead of itemized deductions. The other big irritation was trying to print out my AZ return for filing by mail once I e-filed my Federal return. It was a very convoluted process. I chose to file by mail because I have no incentive to pay Intuit, Inc. a sizable state e-filing fee, especially when I have to pay the state a balance on my return, but TurboTax doesn't make that an easy filing option.
What's great about it: imported information from previous tax year
What's not so great: wrongly itemized state return, confusing options for mailing return

I was very frustrated this year with this package. I have used this for many years in the past and it seems the final efiling is too cumbersome - messages should be given up front as to what is needed for efiling like code words, credit card #, passwords, etc. Also no direction is given that you should click once or click twice - most things we use nowadays require 2 clicks - please specify. After personal / credit card info / bank info was added I was told I had to download upgrades - the data was not saved and had to be re entered.
What's great about it: Walk through of all the areas I needed to put information
What's not so great: Too slow to get from screen to screen - nothing to show in process
