Contines to Make Filing Easier
on April 6, 2014

I've been using TurboTax for many years. Each year it gets better. With its ability to pull from previous returns, and make connections between my past and current returns, I feel like I am dealing with a personal tax advisor rather than a computer program.
I would like to have more help and explanations available for each line, especially investments like Schedule K.
What's great about it: Carry over of previous years information. Knowing which questions to ask. Links to accounts for download.
What's not so great: None.

The software program is very slow to use compared to past years. Also, takes a long time to load the software.
The software program cost to much.
The program gives me confidance in preparing my taxes and I use it every year.
What's great about it: Turbotax gives me confidence in preparing my income taxes
What's not so great: This year's software is very slow & Pricey

Painless!

I've used TurboTax for a few years now. I was dreading the task and postponing this year. Really stressful year at work and all I had was a disorganized envelope into which I threw all the tax related documents. Thought it was going to take me all week. I used the step-by-step process and that allowed me to fish out the relevant documents (or look things up on-line where I didn't have them) at each stage. The comments as each section is finished are oddly calming. Like TurboTax knows what it's doing and is in control. I didn't have to worry about math mistakes or doing the AMT calculation which used to drive me crazy. You changed the entry for charities so I didn't have to enter all the addresses. I was done in one evening! Stress free!
What's great about it: Step-through allows on-the-fly organization. No worries about math mistakes or weird calculations.
What's not so great: Nothing - you changed the part I didn't like in the past, having to enter addresses of charities.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Comprehensive but with a few difficulties

TurboTax makes filing tax returns possible without manual form filling, particularly for those with several banking and investment accounts. The ability to download account information directly from the companies saves considerable time in gathering data. The step by step process makes preparing a return relatively easy. A few improvements would be welcome, including: alphabetic listing of charities; easier way to get to a specific data entry page without starting from the beginning of a section; ability to print individual pages of the program with the print command. There was a glitch with e-filing (Mac version) that should have been corrected by April when I filed.
What's great about it: Thorough step-by-step instructions and direct account downloading
What's not so great: Charities not displayed alphabetically, some confusing areas
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I have some mutual funds that invest oversees. I receive dividends form those funds. I also receive a statement "foreign taxes paid". Trying to reclaim this minor amount takes about 5 times as the rest of the return. I checked every country from which a dividend/foreign tax statement was received. then your form ask for a breakdown by individual countries. After country A, i attempted country B. Everything was changed to country B. I gave up, and listed all dividends and taxes for a single country. PS The brokers form also lists "various" countries, no such choice exists in your master list. Why would you even consider using foreign as a deduction instead of a credit? Maybe I was not the only one having trouble with the credit, people just throw up their arms.
What's not so great: Foreign tax credits tough to navigate

I have used Turbo Tax for years and have never had any problems submitting the forms. This year I could not efile either of my returns. It kept telling me I needed to update from the IRS. I do that every time I go to the return. Very frustrating.
What's great about it: Easy to prepare
What's not so great: Cannot efile

Good if you avoid more info help during the return process. Don't click on "ask for more info" buttons!!
What's not so great: If clicking on "?" or help icons during the return process turns the program off and all info entered so far is lost.
