Now at Ease

Taxes are complicated, and there are lots of questions on tax forms that are worded in a way that make you say "ok, if they mean this sense of (a word) then yes I do qualify for blah blah blah, but if they mean that sense of (the word) then no I don't qualify." Well TurboTax has pop-up boxes to answer all those questions to help explain what The TaxMan really means, and they're all conveniently located in exactly the place they need to be - right next to the questions, not hidden in some obscure web search feature! I was very anxious about doing my taxes, but TurboTax walked me through it all, and I feel so confident that I did it right and that I'm getting my maximum refund!
What's great about it: Lots of answers to questions that arose

Turbotax is generally a godsend, and I would be lost without it after several years of happy use. Its explanation of one small item for Tax Year 2013 , however, did not meet its usual top standards. For NJ returns, Turbotax seemed to require adding pretax contributions to a pension plan other than a 401k to the amount of taxable wages in W-2 Box 16, through one of its drop down menus. I nearly did this until researching the NJ State OMB site and finding that such contributions are already included in the W-2 figure in Box 16. Adding those amounts into the Turbotax drop down menu would have resulted in double-counting those amounts, and would have increased the tax due, in my case, by over $700. I may have misread the Turbotax instructions, so in that case Turbotax may not have been wrong, but was merely confusing. There should be an easy fix for next year. Thank you!
What's great about it: Saves huge labor by dumping prior year info into current year, generally walks through complexities in clear language.
What's not so great: Inadequate explanation of NJ Return tax treatment of pretax pension contributions.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Not Intuit's Best yearly release
on April 6, 2014

I've used TurboTax since 2002, and I must say this is the most disappointing version of this annually released software. Every year this software is released to do the same function: File taxes. I do not use this program to file my Illinois State Taxes.
So why does this software run even slower, and so much more poorly than previous releases?
The good: It is user friendly and walks through each step broken down into plain English. It's accurate and easy to import previous years' information. Allows imports of W2s and 1099s from online sources (when available from partners) Allows direct saving to PDF without me using my PDF printer
The Bad: Slow...slow...slow to transition to next pages This PC more than exceeds your Minimum requirements. Failed to register mouse clicks on most pages. Double-click MIGHT help.
It failed to submit my efile three attempts into an endless loop of screens with no errors until I completely uninstalled and re-installed the software.
The Result: It does what it needs to do: File taxes. If the buggy software continues or is not optimized, I may be divorcing TurboTax after our 12 year marriage and filing my Single Status with another tax software.
What's great about it: User friendly and straight forward
What's not so great: Buggy software, slow responding, failed to efile

Difficult time installing update after return completed. Took 4 days to sort out and file.
The balance was like previous years but more difficult in 2013.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

TTAX gets better each year. I'd like to see the mouse cursor snap to near the yes/no buttons - would be easier to use.
What's great about it: quickly got thru this
What's not so great: state filing charge too high

Need Larger Number Ability
on April 6, 2014

I've used the product for more than 5 years now. Overall, it is outstanding. However, the last couple of years I've run into the issue of the fields not being large enough for certain schedules, etc. So my suggestion would be to make the fields larger, up to billions (to be safe) on schedule D or other schedules that might need more room. Or remove cents on the schedules or the entire program. Thanks.
What's great about it: Very well organized
What's not so great: Need to be able to input larger numbers
Pros: I bought or sold investments
